CROOKSTON BOY’S SOCCER FALLS IN REMATCH WITH PELICAN RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer fell at Pelican Rapids Tuesday, 10-0, in a matchup of Section 8A opponents. The Pirates opened their 2020 season on September 1 with a 5-0 loss to Pelican Rapids at home. “We saw a much improved Pelican Rapids team Tuesday,” Crookston head coach Lon Boike said, “compared to the one we saw to start the year.”

FIRST HALF –
Crookston got off to a decent start in the first 20 minutes, but after giving up a couple of goals, Boike said the defense began to break down. “We played really well in the first 20 minutes, but then we gave up a couple of goals and had a few defensive breakdowns,” Boike said. “There were also a few questionable no-call offside by the officials, and that hurt us, and that led to some more (Pelican Rapids) goals.” At goalie, freshman Caden Boike replaced senior Kaleb Thingelstad with about seven minutes left in the first half. Thingelstad came out with a minor injury, but re-entered the game and played midfielder for the entire second half.

SECOND HALF –
After leading 6-0 at halftime, the Vikings added four more goals to solidify their largest winning margin of the season thus far. Tuesday also marked the fourth shut out win for Pelican Rapids in 2020. The Vikings stayed aggressive on offense throughout, finishing 28 shots-on-goal, compared to just three by Crookston. Senior midfielder Khadar Ibrahim had four goals to lead the Vikings. Junior striker and third-year start Jesus Moreno scored two goals.

Crookston falls to 1-4 on the season, while Pelican Rapids improves to 4-1. The Pirates are back in action on Tuesday, September 22 when they host Detroit Lakes. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. and will be carried live on KROX. Coverage will start at 3:30 p.m.
