CROOKSTON BOY’S TENNIS SPLITS MATCHES WITH MINNEWASKA AND THIEF RIVER FALLS

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s tennis team was down in Fargo today at Courts Plus for a triangular with Minnewaska Area and Thief River Falls. The Pirates were able to win their first match of the day over Minnewaska Area 5-2, before falling to the Prowlers 6-1 to go 1-1 on the day.

CROOKSTON VS MINNEWASKA AREA –
The singles matches were the first ones to finish and Crookston took an early lead with wins at #2, #3, and #4 singles. Reggie Winjum would lose a first set tiebreaker 6-7 (7-9) at #2 singles, but the freshman would respond with a strong second set win 6-2, forcing a third set tiebreak. Winjum would secure the victory in the third set winning the tiebreak 10-6. San Widseth would also lose his first set at #3 singles 1-6, before bouncing back to even things up with a second set win 7-6 (7-3). In Widseth’s third set tiebreaker, the freshman would fight back and forth and earn a hard-fought win 11-9 to take the match. At #4 singles Gunnar Groven’s match was far less dramatic as he took care of business winning his match 6-1, 6-0, putting the Pirates in front 3-0 and just one win away from the team victory.

In doubles, Minnewaska would take both the #1 and #2 matches to cut the Pirates lead in the match down to 3-2. The #1 doubles team of Tatum Lubinski and Nathan Kelly would split their first two sets before losing the third set tiebreaker 10-7. The Duo of Jack Everett and Elliot Bartrum would also split their two sets at #2 doubles, and in the third set tiebreaker, it was the same story with Minnewaska Area coming away with the win 10-7. Crookston would win the match thanks to Caden Boike and Colton Osborn who were playing at #3 doubles. They had no issue winning their match 6-1, 7-5 to give Crookston a 4-2 lead with the #1 singles match still going on.

The last match to go final was #1 singles, where Isaac Thomforde had another strong showing, picking up the win 6-3, 6-1, to give the Pirates a 5-2 win in the match.

Crookston improves to 2-2 on the season with the win.

CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS –
Due to time constraints, each match was only one set up to 8. Crookston mixed their lineup around in this match and had a few guys get a look at singles as well as doubles. The first three matches to go final were all in favor of the Prowlers. They would take down Tatum Lubinski and Nathan Kelly at #1 doubles 8-4 to take an early lead in the match. At #2 doubles, Sam Widseth and Gunnar Groven would be defeated 8-2, and at #4 singles, Caden Boike who got his first look at singles would fall 8-3.

The struggles for the Pirates continued as Reggie Winjum was defeated at #2 singles 8-1, Jack Everett suffered a defeat at #3 singles 8-2, and the team of Elliot Bartrum and Colton Osborn were also defeated. Osborn and Bartrum did have the closest defeat in the match, however, going right to the end before losing 8-7. The only win for the Pirates came from Isaac Thomforde, as the junior won at #1 singles 8-6, giving him a 2-0 day against stiff competition.

With the loss, Crookston falls to 2-3 in the young season. Their quadrangular for tomorrow in Moorhead has been canceled so they will have the weekend off.
