PIRATE BOY’S TENNIS FALL TO BEMIDJI IN DUEL

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Tennis team traveled to Bemidji on Thursday for a dual against the Bemidji Lumberjacks at Bemidji State University. The Pirates battled hard at singles but the difference in the match was that Bemidji won all three doubles matches, defeating the Pirates 5-2.

Isaac Thomforde was once again tasked with going up against a very tough player at #1 singles, and Casey Rupp of Bemidji defeated Thomforde in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. At #2 singles Reggie Winjum won a hard-fought first set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-5. He would carry that momentum into the second set and win 6-1 giving Crookston one of their two wins on the day. Sam Widseth provided the other win for the Pirates at #3 singles. Like Winjum, Widseth won a tiebreaker in one of his sets. He would pick up the win 6-4, 7-6 winning his tiebreaker 8-6. Gunnar Groven was placed at #4 singles and couldn’t get going in his match, falling 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets.

Even though the singles matches were an even split 2-2, the doubles matches were where the Lumberjacks had their success, winning all three. at #1 doubles Tatum Lubinski played with Nathan Kelly who was playing in his first match of the season. They would fall 6-1, 6-1. At #2 doubles, Jack Everett and Grant Funk battled hard in the first set before dropping it 7-5, and the Lumberjacks rolled in the second set 6-2 for a straight-set win. At #3 singles were the duo Elliot Bartrum and Evan Pruneda who was making his varsity debut. They won just one game falling 6-0, 6-1.

Crookston drops to 1-2 on the season and will play a lot of tennis. The Pirates will be in a triangular tomorrow with Minnewaska Area and Thief River Falls in Fargo. Their quadrangular for this Saturday in Moorhead has been canceled.
