The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team beat the East Grand Forks Green Wave 4-3 and finished the day with a 5-2 victory over the Fergus Falls Otters in the final matches of the regular season in two Section 8AA matches played at courts in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks.
CROOKSTON VS EAST GRAND FORKS
The Crookston Pirates had a full team for the first time since the first week of the season and they took advantage of a short-handed Green Wave team on their way to a 4-3 victory, the second over East Grand Forks in the past week.
Crookston took a quick 1-0 lead when Nick Garmen won his singles match in less than 30 minutes with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. “Nick has been playing good and has his confidence back,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “He has been consistent and made short work of his match.”
Jack Garmen won his third singles match in relatively quick fashion with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. “Jack had a good bounce back from yesterday,” said Coach Brekken. “He played well and made short work of his match.”
Crookston picked up two more wins at doubles with the first doubles team of Blake Fee and Logan Wardner winning their match in three sets. “They got off to a great start and they kind of let their opponents back into the match,” said Coach Brekken. “They finished strong in the third set and that was nice to see.” The third doubles team of Logan Schultz and Dilon Owens won their match in three sets. After losing their first set they bounced back to win the second set 6-1, and they won the third set 10-3. “It was our first win at third doubles this year,” said Coach Brekken. “It was nice to have Logan Schultz back in the line-up and they started slow, but bounced back and finished strong and now we are starting to win the tie-breakers.”
Crookston continues to play some solid tennis in the past two weeks and it helps to have the full team back in the lineup. “It makes a huge difference having all the guys in the lineup and it isn’t a coincidence we have been playing well lately,” said Coach Brekken.

Nick Garmen picked up the first Pirate victory in a 31-minute match. “Nick had me time his match and he went out there and made it a quick match,” said Coach Brekken. “He is playing well and he showed it today.”
Jack Garmen won at third singles 6-1, 6-1. “Jack is getting into a groove right now and he plays at the same level throughout the match,” said Coach Brekken.
First doubles, Blake Fee and Logan Wardner, won their match behind a great start, 6-0, 6-4. “They came out and the first set was 25 minutes including four straight aces from Blake,” said Coach Brekken. “In the second set, Fergus Falls didn’t quit and closed strong, but the Blake and Logan were playing well in the Fergus Falls match.”
The second doubles team of Robert and Tanner Janorschke played well and won 6-2, 6-2 for the fourth Pirate victory. “They played well and they are starting to find their groove on the first serves,” said Coach Brekken. “They played well together and had a good day.”
Mason Owens continued his solid play to win his fourth singles match. “He has been coming into his own the past two weeks,” said Coach Brekken. “He is an even and consistent player and he gets better in every match he plays and that is fun to see.”
Crookston finishes the regular season winning three of their last four section matches and the one loss was 4-3 to Perham. “We are playing the best tennis of the year right now,” said Coach Brekken. “We had a full lineup today and we will have the rest of the week to practice and start playoffs on Monday in Detroit Lakes.
