CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL HOLD SPECIAL MEETING TO CANVASS ELECTION RESULTS THURSDAY

Crookston City Council

The Crookston City Council held a special meeting on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The only item on the agenda was a resolution, canvassing the tabulation of votes cast for four City Council positions and declaring the results of the November 3rd election.

The resolution passed 5-0 with councilmen Clayton Briggs and Joe Kresl choosing to abstain from the vote since they both won reelection on November 3rd. Angel Weasner, the Finance Director for the City of Crookston, said such a meeting to canvass election results is required by law in Minnesota.

“It is required by state law that we hold a canvassing board prior to the election results actually being finalized,” Weasner said. “The county had seven days (after Election Day) to tabulate and give the final election results to the city prior to this meeting.”

Crookston City Council will have one new face and three familiar faces in 2021, with long-time council member and former Mayor Wayne Melbye winning the at-large spot, beating incumbent Bobby Baird by 402 votes. Kristie Jerde won the Ward 1 race, beating incumbent Jake Fee by 116 votes to give the council its first female since Cindy Gjerswald was on the council a few years ago.  In Ward 3, Incumbent Clayton Briggs narrowly defeated Blake Royal by 27 votes. In Ward 5, Incumbent Joe Kresl won reelection, beating Casey Anderson by 51 votes.  Weasner said the newly elected council members will be installed on January 1st, 2021, and will be formally sworn in during a special City Council meeting on January 4th.

“Come January 1st, the new candidates will all be installed,” Weasner said. “We’ll have a special meeting on the first Monday of January 2021 and we will swear in the new council members. I appreciate everyone putting their name in the hat, and we look forward to working with a new council come January 1st.”
