CROOKSTON EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION OFFERING CLASSES ALL FALL

The Crookston Early Childhood Family Education will be offering plenty of events this fall and winter. The program allows parents and their children to play, learn and grow together.

Washington School Principal Denice Oliver gave an overview of the program and different options for families. “We have classes that are offered here at Washington School, and we also have community events,” said Oliver. “Those are big collaborative efforts between many entities throughout our community, including our early childhood initiative. The purpose is to get families together so they can enjoy time with each other.”

There are classes weekly, as well as once a month. There are also special nights throughout the year, such as “Grandparents Night,” held on November 29, at Washington School.

There are also options for classes inside as well as outside. Oliver talked about one of the classes that will take place this fall outside. “We have a class called Wide Open Spaces,” and we’re going to take that outside for the most part,” said Oliver. “It will be a time where children can explore their natural surroundings at the many wonderful parks we have in Crookston.”

Oliver mentioned she feels the parents and families in Crookston are fortunate to have so many different early childhood events other communities don’t. Some states don’t even have Early Childhood Family Education funding at all.

This year there will also be a music class where children can learn with a unique curriculum. Oliver talked about this class, as well as one of the biggest hits every year. “We’re offering a music class featuring Kindermusik, which allows the children to learn through play, movement, and music,” said Oliver. “Then a big hit for us is the “Pop in and Play” class which is every fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. What’s great about this class is that no matter what the weather is, they can play in the gym for that hour.”

Virtual classes will also be offered featuring a “Book it and Cook it” class where parents and children can learn new cooking recipes while also reading books. All classes that are currently being offered will go into December. After that, another newsletter will be sent out from the Early Childhood Family Education with new classes beginning in January.

Oliver also mentioned any costs associated with the classes and how to find more information if you have any questions. “So, there are some registration costs, but most of the things that people have access to can be free,” said Oliver. “We don’t turn anyone away because of an inability to pay, so there are always options available for everyone. The number to call is 218-281-5078 if people want more information on any of the classes.”

Some classes are underway, but there is still time to register as registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can also access the brochure with all the information and list of classes on the Crookston School’s website, https://www.crookston.k12.mn.us/departments-communityeducation-ecfe.

For the entire conversation with Denice Oliver, you can tune in to KROX Saturday morning at 8:35 a.m. for the Focus on Education program. You can listen on 105.7 FM, 1260 AM, or by clicking “Listen Live” at the top of this page.
