CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTING OPEN HOUSE OCTOBER 9 FOR FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

The Crookston Fire Department will celebrate Fire Prevention Week by hosting an open house on Saturday, October 9. This year’s theme for the week is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Fire Prevention Week is from October 3 to October 9 this year.

Crookston Fire Department Captain Bob Magsam says he would love to see many members of the public show up for the event. “The Open House like we’ve done in the past will be held at the Main Fire Station,” said Magsam. “We invite the general public, adults and kids alike, to show up, have a little fun and meet your local firefighters.”

The event will be from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and will offer a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. There will also be refreshments such as chips, hot dogs, and juice available throughout the day.

The Fire Department puts on an Open House every year during Fire Prevention Week, and Magsam mentioned a few of the activities offered this year. “Our always favorite Ladder Truck Bucket Ride will be available so people can go up into the air and get a good view of our community,” said Magsam. “There will be station tours and equipment tours; the Fire Department has been blessed in getting some new equipment, so will get to explain that to the public. There will also be an opportunity for kids to spray a fire hose and try on a set of Firefighting gear.”

There will also be fire safety brochures handed out and an opportunity to sign up for a free in-home fire safety inspection.

Another thing the Fire Department will be doing throughout Fire Prevention Week is heading into the local schools to talk to kids about Fire Safety. Due to COVID-19, the department couldn’t take advantage of this opportunity last year.

Magsam talked about the opportunity to talk to kids about the importance of fire safety and what will be discussed. “We try and do it every year if we can, and we go in and discuss fire safety tips and fire prevention with the 1st-6th graders at all the public and private schools in Crookston,” said Magsam. “We follow that theme and things that are related to the fire prevention week.”

Magsam said that the Kindergartners from the different schools are also welcomed to come down to the Fire Department during the week and learn about Fire Safety. “The Kindergartners are encouraged to come to the Fire Station during the week, and we give them a tour of the facility,” said Magsam. “We also do some fire drills with them and talk about some fire safety tips.”

The schedule for the Fire Department with the schools they’ll be visiting next week is down below. The Open House on October 9 is free, and the Fire Department encourages the public to attend.
