CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT GIVES HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

The Crookston Fire Department is offering tips regarding the importance of fire safety during the holidays.

The tips include emergency escape planning from house fires, carbon monoxide safety, and overall winter holiday safety. “One of the things we want to make sure that people keep on is their escape planning,” said Crookston Firefighter Brian Hanson, “In the event of an emergency, whether your house is on fire or you have a carbon monoxide emergency, being able to get out of your house and out of that hazard is going to help you if you know ways out.”

The escape planning includes tips such as creating a map of your home and finding escape routes in case of an emergency. By creating a map of escape routes, people can be more aware of window access and where each piece of furniture lies to avoid it in high-stress scenarios.

“We need to make sure we keep on that because the weather is always changing,” said Hanson, “We’re moving into the snow right now; it can blow off the top of the house, and we need to make sure windows can open and doors things of that nature.”

The Crookston Fire Department is also preparing to kick off its “Hydrant Heroes” program. The fire department goes around the city every winter and clears off every fire hydrant, especially after snowfall. The standard during the winter is to have a three-foot ring cleared around the fire hydrants to ensure maximum hydrant usage when needed.

Crookston Firefighters are now notifying businesses to clear every exit to their respective buildings during this time of the year and maintain every escape route of the buildings.

“We’re always pushing safety with carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors,” said Hanson, “If the community has any feeling that something is wrong, don’t be afraid to call. We’re here for the community’s safety and want to ensure everybody is safe during Christmas time. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call. We want to make sure everybody has a happy Christmas.”
