The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team continues its tough schedule as they play undefeated Menahga in a Section 8AA matchup at the Menahga High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game with two Grace Boll free throws, and after a Menahga three-pointer, Naomi Johnson scored on a nice pass from Maddi Bruggeman to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead 1:35 into the game. The rest of the half was dominated by Menahga as they finished the half on a 46-9 run. The Braves run started with a 23-1 run sparked by stellar full-court and half-court defense that forced Crookston into a bunch of turnovers. Menahga was also efficient on the offensive end with a mix of layups off steals and three-pointers for a 26-5 lead. Crookston stopped the first run with baskets from Halle Nicholas and Chloe Boll to get within a 26-9 deficit with 8:03 left in the half. Menahga started another 23-1 run to take a 49-10 lead. Crookston scored the final points of the half with a Naomi Johnson basket and Menahga led 49-13 at halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Crookston’s Mad Bruggeman scored the first basket of the half before Menahga went on a 15-0 run with five players scoring for a 64-15 lead. The run came to an end when Chloe Boll made a free throw with 12:59 left in the game. After two Braves baskets, Crookston’s Halle Nicholas made two free throws, and Chloe Boll made a basket to get within a 68-20 deficit with 9:03 left in the game, and three seconds later, running time started. The final nine minutes went quickly, and the highlight would have been when Crookston eighth grader Morgan Boll made a basket for her first varsity points of her career, and Crookston lost 73-27.
Crookston drops to 4-11 on the year and will host Roseau at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Menahga improves to 12-0 on the year.
