Crookston Boys Hockey is defeated by Little Falls in tough non-section matchup

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team had trouble possessing the puck and winning faceoffs, and that proved to be critical as the Flyers of Little Falls defeated the Crookston Pirates by a score of 4-1 at the Crookston Sports Center.

FIRST PERIOD
Crookston started out with a bang in the first period, getting a golden opportunity on a shot by Greyson Ecker, but Izaak Kaliswas up to the occasion, saving that first big chance, That set the trend for how the first period would go for the Pirates, as each of their opportunities were shut down by Kalis, who had nine saves in the period. At 2:15, the Flyers got their first opportunity, and were able to cash in as Joey Welinski found a puck in front on a turnover and beat David Larson, giving the Flyers an early 1-0 lead. That lead would stick for the remainder of the period, as a goalie duel began to commence, with Larson and Kalis both making multiple acrobatic saves. No team had any penalties, and the scored stayed at 1-0 through the first intermission.

SECOND PERIOD
The second period began with a team hot to start, but this time it was Little Falls, as they were able to get the first 7 shots on goal in the period. Larson did a great job holding the first 6 out with relative ease, but the 7th shot off the stick of Kyler Schmidgall was just too fast for Larson, and the Flyers took a 2-0 lead. That lead would not last for too long, however, as Garrett Fischer sniped a puck off a Jay Reese faceoff win 59 seconds later beyond Kalis to close the gap down to 1. That gap stayed consistent for the remainder of the period, as goalies continued to step up. Kalis and Larson each made 12 saves in the period, and were both able to thwart an opposing power play, allowing the game to stay at 2-1 heading into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD
Crookston was aiming to get off to a hot start in the 3rd period, the same way they did in the first. However, Joey Welinski had an answer to that, scoring just 43 seconds in to the period to put the Flyers up 3-1. This ended up being a bit of a deflator for the Pirates as the period went on; they began to commit more penalties, and that came back to bite them as Ryan Oothoudt put one by Larson on the power play to give the Flyers a 4-1 advantage. Crookston’s offense was stymied by Kalis, who recorded 30 saves on 31 shot attempts. The Pirates had a couple opportunites on breakaways, but Kasil rose to the task on those as well, giving the Flyers a 4-1 win.

Crookston falls to 9-7-1 and will play Kittson County Central on Tuesday. Little Falls improves to 9-4-1 on the season.
