Crookston Girls Basketball gives up late lead, falls to Roseau on Senior Night

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team led for most of the game, but a Roseau Ram 12-0 run over halfway through the second half and a 7-0 run in the final minute gave Roseau a 61-53 victory to spoil Crookston’s Senior Night in a Section 8AA game played at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF
Crookston had a great start to the game when they scored the first 11 points behind Brooklyn Waldal’s six points, Chloe Boll’s three-pointer, and a basket apiece from Grace Boll and Halle Nicholas. Roseau’s first points of the game came when Brooklyn Hulst made a basket with 12:31 left in the half to get within an 11-2 deficit. Anna Ulvin added a basket, and after the Pirates, Chloe Boll scored, the Rams’ Ulvin made a three-pointer, and Alivia Mather made a basket to get within a 15-9 deficit. Crookston led 22-16 when they went on an 8-0 run run with Chloe Boll scoring four points and two points apiece from Madi Bruggeman and Grace Boll for a 30-16 lead. Roseau made a free throw with 2.4 seconds left, and Crookston took a 30-17 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Crookston started the second half on a 4-1 run with baskets from Bruggeman and Waldal for a 34-18 lead. Roseau answered with eight straight points, with four points apiece from Hayden and Hulst to get within a 34-26 deficit six minutes into the half. Crookston responded with a 7-1 run with four different players scoring for a 41-27 lead with 10:37 to go. Crookston led 46-34 with 8:01 left in the game when Roseau used outstanding defense, solid offense, offensive rebounds, and some tough baskets to go on a 12-0 run to tie the game at 46-46. The run started with an Anna Ulvin three-pointer, two free throws from Hayden, who then added an outstanding three-point play. The next two baskets were offensive rebounds and put-backs by Aliviah Mather to tie the game at 46. The teams were tied again at 48 when Crookston’s Chloe Boll made a free throw for a 49-48 lead with 3:46 remaining. Roseau took its first lead of the game 15 seconds later when Brooklyn Hulst fired a pass down the court to a wide-open Hayden for a layup and the first Ram lead of the game at 50-49. Crookston came up empty on their next possession only to have Hulst fire a pass down the court to Hayden again for a basket and a 52-49 lead. Crookston’s Boll followed with a basket, and the teams exchanged points. After Crookston’s Waldal made two free throws to get within a 54-53 deficit with 1:24 remaining, Crookston missed two free throws, which could have tied and given them the lead. Crookston didn’t score the rest of the game as Roseau ended the game on a 7-0 run with another Ram three-point play, this time from Anna Ulvin, and four more points for a 61-53 Roseau victory.

Crookston drops to 1-6 on the year and will take on Ada-Borup-West in Ada on Monday at 6:00 p.m. Roseau improves to 5-0 on the year.
