The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team found out why the Menahga Braves are undefeated this season after a 74-42 loss in a Section 8AA matchup at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
Menahga scored the first basket of the game before Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman made two free throws to tie the game at 2-2. Menahga answered with a 10-0 run. The run started with an Alexis Davidson three-pointer followed by seven points from Dreah Christianson for a 12-2 lead. The teams exchanged baskets, and after a Chloe Boll basket, the Braves led 20-10 with 9:58 left in the half. Menahga went on a 12-2 run behind four points apiece from Mayme Pinoniemi, Christensen, and Kiana Skoog for a 32-12 lead. The teams played even the rest of the way and Crookston’s Chloe Boll made a three-pointer at the buzzer to bring the Pirates within a 45-23 deficit at halftime.
SECOND HALF
The second half had a slow start as neither team scored until Menahga’s Davidson scored just shy of four minutes in. Crookston’s Chloe Boll answered with a free throw, and Bruggeman added a basket in the paint. Menahga countered with six points for a 53-26 lead before Crookston’s Bruggeman scored four points. The back-and-forth continued, and the Braves built a 68-36 lead with four minutes remaining. Both teams went to the bench in the final minutes and Menahga won the game 74-42.
Crookston drops to 5-16 on the year and will host Stephen-Argyle on Monday. Menahga improves to 20-0.
