CROOKSTON GIRL’S BASKETBALL SHAKES OFF RUST AND BEATS PARK RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team was off for 12 days and was missing one of their top players and still beat Park Rapids 40-31 in a Section 8AA game played in Park Rapids. 

FIRST HALF – 
Park Rapids started the scoring with a three-pointer over two minutes into the game.  Defense continued to be the theme of the game as both team’s offenses struggled and Emma Gunderson made a free throw to get Crookston on the board with 13:47 left in the half.  After a Park Rapids free throw, Crookston got their first basket of the game when Abby Borowicz scored on an assist from Halle Winjum.  Park Rapids answered with a 7-0 run over a three-minute span and had an 11-3 lead with 10:36 left in the half.  Crookston settled in and Halle Winjum took over the game.  Halle went on a 7-0 run on her own with a basket, a three-pointer, and two free throws to get within an 11-10 deficit.  Park Rapids made a free throw before Emma Osborn scored a basket off a Jenna Coauette assist and the game was tied at 12 with 4:44 left in the half. The Osborn basket started a 9-0 run to end the half as Halley Winjum scored three points, Madison Hoiland scored her first basket of the season, and Abby Borowicz scored with 15 seconds left in the half with an assist from Halle Winjum for a 19-12 lead going into halftime. 

SECOND TIME – 
Halle Winjum got the second half scoring going with a basket one minute into the half with an assist from Borowicz for a 21-12 lead.  Park Rapids answered with a basket before Crookston went on a 7-0 run over two minutes.  Borowicz started the run with a free throw, followed by baskets from Halle Winjum, Osborn, and Hoiland for a 28-14 lead five minutes into the half. Park Rapids went on a 15-6 run and with 3:42 left in the game, they were within a 34-29 deficit.  40 seconds later Osborn scored and two minutes later Ally Perreault scored with an assist from Halle Winjum and Osborn added two free throws with 49 seconds left for a 40-29 lead.  Park Rapids scored a few seconds later and that would be it as Crookston held on for a 40-31 victory. 

Crookston improves to 7-2 on the year and will travel to Virginia on Friday and Hermantown on Saturday, both games will be on KROX Radio.  Park Rapids drops to 3-6 on the year.
