The Crookston Pirate Girls’ Basketball battled, but the Hawley Nuggets used a late 10-0 run to win the game 62-50 in a Section 8AA matchup at the Hawley High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
Hawley started the game on a 5-0 run. Over four minutes into the game, Crookston got on the board with a Halle Nicholas free throw, and Morgan Boll followed with a rebound and putback to bring the Pirates within a 5-3 deficit. Hawley answered with a three-pointer before Chloe Boll made a basket. Hawley scored the next four points for a 12-5 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. Crookston answered with eight straight points with four points from Chloe Boll, a Nicholas rebound and putback, and Madi Bruggeman had a nice up and under move to give the Pirates a 13-12 lead with 7:48 remaining in the half. The back-and-forth battle continued with ties at 15 and 19. Hawley outscored Crookston in the final five minutes of the half by a 7-3 margin to take a 26-22 lead at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Hawley started the second half on a 10-2 run in the first three minutes. Crookston’s Brooklyn Waldal broke the run with a basket and that started a 6-0 run with Grace Boll making two free throws and a basket from Chloe Boll to get within a 36-30 deficit. Hawley scored the next six points for a 42-30 lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Crookston settled down and went on an 11-0 run behind four points from Nicholas, three points from Waldal, and two points apiece from Chloe Boll and Bruggeman to get within a 42-41 deficit. The teams exchanged baskets, and Hawley led 44-43 when they went on a 12-0 run over a two-minute span for a 56-43 lead with three minutes left in the game. Crookston’s Bruggeman made two free throws to stop the run, but Hawley held on for a 62-50 victory.
Crookston drops to 3-7 on the year and will host Fertile-Beltrami on Friday. Hawley improves to 8-5 on the year.
