The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team led by one point with two mintues left in the game, but the Fosston Greyhounds scored the last seven points to win the game 54-48 at the Fosston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
Fosston had a great start, making its first shot and jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the first four minutes. The game started with a Brielled Duppong three-pointer before Crookston’s Grace Boll answered with a three-pointer. Fosston answered with the next 10 points with a Gretchen Anderson three-pointer followed by another Duppong three and baskets from Miley Hove and Lexy Illies for a 13-3 lead. Crookston answered in a huge way as they went on a 20-2 run over an eight-minute span. The run started with a Madi Bruggeman three-point play, and after a Fosston basket, the Pirates scored the next 17 points with nine points from Chloe Boll, Brooklyn Waldal added four free throws, Halle Nicholas had a steal and a layup, and Morgan Boll added a basket for a 23-15 lead with 6:32 left in the half. Fosston ended the half on a 10-4 run with four different players scoring, and the final basket of the half was a Greyhound three-pointer by Hannah Fonder as Crookston took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
The second half was a back-and-forth battle for the entire 18 minutes. Crookston started the half with a Chloe Boll basket and a free throw from Waldal for a 30-25 lead. Fosston countered with a 13-2 run with 11 of the points scored by the outstanding sophomore Brielle Duppong. The other two points were scored by Miley Hove, and the Greyhounds led 38-32 with 9:49 left in the game. Trailing 41-34 Chloe Boll and Waldal scored baskets to bring Crookston within a 41-38 deficit. Fosston led 45-40 when Chloe Boll scored five straight points to tie the game at 45 with 2:36 left. Fosston’s Duppong made a basket before Crookston’s Grace Boll banked a three-pointer from an almost impossible angle to give the Pirates a 48-47 lead with two minutes to go. Fosston answered with an Illies basket and 67 seconds later Duppong hit a big-time three for a 52-48 Greyhound lead with 37 seconds remaining. Duppong went to the free throw line with 8.9 second remaining and made both free throws to seal the Fosston win by a score of 54-48.
Crookston drops to 4-13 on the year and will travel to Climax to take on the Climax-Fisher Knights on Friday. Fosston improves to 9-6 on the year and will take on Ada-Borup-West on Thursday.
