The Crookston Pirate Girls’ Basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game and held off a Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbird rally for a 48-46 victory.
FIRST HALF
Crookston started the game on an 8-0 run with Madi Bruggeman scoring five points, Grace Boll added two, and Brooklyn Waldal made a free throw. Mahnomen/Waubun finally got on the board over five minutes into the game before Crookston’s Chloe Boll and Halle Nicholas made baskets for a 12-3 lead.
Mahnomen/Waubun battled back and scored the next seven points to get within a 12-10 deficit with seven minutes left in the half. Crookston answered with two Chloe Boll free throws, a Waldal basket, and a three-pointer from Chloe for a 19-10 lead. A few minutes later, Crookston led 23-12 with 4:29 left in the half, but the Thunderbirds ended the half on an 8-0 run to cut the Pirate lead to 23-20 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Crookston started the second half with baskets from Bruggeman and Chloe Boll. Mahnomen/Waubun responded with four points, and that started the back-and-forth battle for the rest of the half. Crookston had a 39-38 lead with less than four minutes remaining when Chloe Boll scored four straight points for a 43-38 lead. Mahnomen/Waubun answered with five consecutive points to tie the game at 43-43. The game was tied at 45 when Chloe Boll made a basket with 55 seconds remaining. Mahnomen/Waubun made a free throw with 25 seconds left to get within a 47-46 deficit. Crookston’s Chloe Boll was fouled with six seconds left in the game and made one free throw for a 48-46 lead. Mahnomen/Waubun wasn’t able to score in the final seconds, and Crookston held on for a 48-46 victory.
Crookston improves to 3-6 on the year and will travel to Hawley on Thursday. Mahnomen/Waubun drops to 2-8 on the year.
