The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball lost to the East Grand Forks Green Wave 65-39 in a Section 8AA matchup played at the East Grand Forks High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
EGF’s Tatem Votava got the Green Wave going with a layup and a three-pointer so start the game. Taylor Burke added two free throws for a 7-0 lead. Crookston got on the board when Chloe Boll made a basket just shy of two minutes into the game. EGF responded with a McKinley Fitzpatrick basket, a three-pointer from Emma Marcott for a 12-2 lead. Crookston finally scored again just over four minutes into the game when Chloe Boll made a free throw.
Votava made a pair of free throws before Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play. Brooklyn Waldal added a basket, and Bruggeman added a long jump shot to bring the Pirates within a 14-10 deficit. Votava stopped the run with a layup, Emily Marcott followed with a basket for an 18-10 lead. Crookston’s Bruggeman answered with another jump shot for a basket before Crookston turned the ball over and Emily Marcott scored on a layup. The teams exchanged baskets and Taylor Berg made a three-pointer for a 25-14 lead with five minutes left in the half. The teams played even the rest of the half and EGF took a 35-20 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
East Grand Forks blew the game open in the first eight minutes of the half as they went on a 19-1 run for a 54-21 lead. Crookston’s Joey Nesseth and Chloe Boll took advantage of a couple of shots from outside, but the EGF defense forced numerous steals and tough shots. The Green Wave’s Votqava, along with Emma and Ellie Marcott, led the team offensively. Crookston got into foul trouble late, and had their reserves finish the game. With East Grand Forks going to the bench to end the game, Crookston took advantage and outscored the Green Wave 18-10 to end the game, but it was all East Grand Forks as the Green Wave won 65-39.
Crookston drops to 2-3 on the year and will host Grafton on Thursday. EGF improves to 3-2.
