CROOKSTON GIRL’S GOLF BATTLES THE ELEMENTS TO WIN EAST GRAND FORKS INVITATIONAL

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Golf team topped the four-team field at the East Grand Forks Invitational at the Valley Golf Course led by medalist Hannah Street. The Pirates finished with a team score of 200 in the nine-hole event, 12 shots clear of runner-up East Grand Forks, while Hannah Street’s 48 was the lowest score in the field earning the senior medalist honors.

Street’s 48 was particularly impressive given the conditions all golfers were forced to endure. “It was just a mentally challenging day,” explained Crookston head coach Jeff Perreault. “To finish nine holes and you’re able to come out on top like Hannah did that’s an accomplishment. It was brutal out there, not only the weather but the course conditions too. Extremely wet, I’m sure some girls didn’t hit a shot in a dry area of the course all day because there’s pretty much water, casual water or a lot of water, pretty much everywhere. Junior Danielle Boyle and sophomore Joslynn Leach each carded 49 to finish one stroke back of their teammate. Freshman Bailey Cameron submitted the fourth and final score for Crookston’s team result after turning in a 54 for Crookston. Eighth-grader Hannah Brouse finished with an impressive 55 while sophomore Catherine Tiedemann rounded out the Pirates’ varsity scores with a 56. “I think for this particular meet you’re pretty much going to say the same thing for everyone,” summarized Perreault. “There’s nothing really that stands out except that they all had good attitudes and finished the nine holes. I’m happy with the score we posted considering the conditions. It’s a grind, and it’s very mental. You want to quit; your hands are freezing. Your face is cold and you know you still have to keep going and the girls did so we’re proud of each and every one of them. This spring is going to be tough conditions from the looks of it in most of our meets. We’re happy to get another nine holes in. We had ten girls golf today, so that’s part of it. Just get out and get some repetition. Hopefully, the conditions will improve for them, and we’ll start seeing scores adjust and come down when those conditions improve.”

The Pirates return to the links on Friday when Crookston travels to Theif River Falls for the Thief River Falls Meet beginning at 9:30 a.m.
