CROOKSTON GIRL’S SOCCER SHUT OUT BY DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team started strong with a shot on goal in the first minute, but the Detroit Lakes Lakers would control the rest of the game on their way to a 4-0 victory in a Section 8A matchup played at Rotary Park in Detroit Lakes.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston came out strong and got a shot on goal in the first minute of the game.  The early shot on goal seemed to spark Detroit Lakes as the Lakers dominated play for the rest of the half.  Pirate goalkeeper Reese Swanson’s aggressive play single-handedly kept Crookston in the game as she made several aggressive diving saves and about halfway through the half she made a diving save to keep the game scoreless. “Reese played excellent tonight,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “She was peppered with hard shots and made some big saves.” Detroit Lakes continued to put pressure on the Crookston defense and the Lakers’ Maddy Bowers got a nice pass and went in for a breakaway.  Bowers kick on goal was saved by a diving Swanson, but the rebound went to the side and Bowers was able to kick the ball into the open net for a 1-0 lead with over six minutes left in the first half.
Crookston was the benefactor of the clock at the end of the half when the Pirates played the ball with the hand and a free-kick from about 18 feet from the net was called. The clock hit zero and Detroit Lakes didn’t get to have the free-kick and the Lakers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.  “We played an excellent first half,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “Good things are happening and they will be rewarded if they keep working hard.”

SECOND HALF-
Detroit Lakes added a second goal in the first minutes of the second half as Sophie Gunderson had a free-kick from midfield and Maddy Bowers caught up with it just outside the 18-foot line and kicked the ball into the net on a beautiful play for the Lakers for a 2-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Detroit Lakes added their third goal of the game when Alex Bettcher kicked the ball off a Pirate in front of the goal and Kate Stearns was in the right spot and kicked the ball into the open net for a 3-0 Laker lead.  “We had a few rough minutes in the second half,” said Coach Reese.
A Pirate defensive miscue just shy of midfield cost them as Detroit Lakes’ Maddy Bowers dribbled a loose ball up the field and kicked the ball into the net from about 18 feet out into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the game to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead.
The Lakers had another chance at scoring halfway through the half, but the Lakers were called for a handball after Swanson rushed out to try to get the ball it bounced up and hit the Laker player and the score remained 4-0.
Neither team would score the rest of the way and Detroit Lakes held on for a 4-0 victory.  “It was a full team effort and we worked out a few kinks adjusting to wide field,” said Reese. “Kailee Magsam and Rylee Solheim both played OD and had a stellar effort.  I am proud of all the girls because they never gave up.”

Crookston drops to 2-3 on the year and will have their toughest opponent of the year when they travel to East Grand Forks on Tuesday.  Detroit Lakes improves to 4-1 on the year.
