The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team scored a goal in the last minute to beat Hillcrest Academy 1-0 in a Section 8A matchup played in Fergus Falls.
The first half had some action with eight shots on goal with each team recording four shots apiece, but both goalies were up to the challenge, which proved to be the theme of the game. The teams took a scoreless tie into the halftime break. “Kailee Magsam played center-mid and had great pressure defensively and great distribution to the corners,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “Aleah Bienek hadn’t played defense for us in a while and filled the role and distributed the ball well to the open spaces for us.”
In the second half, Crookston started to control play a little more as the game progressed, but the Pirates didn’t have anything to show for it on the scoreboard. It came down to the final minutes of the game and Crookston put more and more pressure on Hillcrest’s defense and in the final minute of the game, Olivia Huck had a perfect corner kick and Madeline Harbott got the ball about six feet out in the middle and tapped it into the net for the winning goal. “Olivia had great corner kicks all game long and had nine of them all on the net,” said Coach Reese. “Madeline played outside-mid most of the game and moved to forward at the end and had some finesse on her shot.”
Reese Swanson picked up the shutout in goal for Crookston while making six saves in the game.
Crookston improves to 1-1 on the year. “It was a great team win,” said Coach Reese. “We played with heart to the finish and it was great to get a goal in the last minute.”
