The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team bounced back a day after their first loss of the season with a 5-2 victory over the East Grand Forks Green Wave at the Crookston High School tennis courts. Crookston beat East Grand Forks 5-2 all three times they have played this season. “The girls came out strong today and we had a lead in all the matches in the first set at one point,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “East Grand Forks kind of loaded up their doubles with three pretty even teams so that caused us some problems, but thankfully the girls came out and played well and won the match.”
Halle Winjum continues her outstanding play as she was the first Pirate to complete her match. Halle played at second singles and won 6-1, 6-0 to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. “She just out-athletes you and puts her opponent in tough spots,” said Coach Brekken. “No matter the type of player she plays, she is able to come away with a win.” Winjum is now 6-0 on the year.
Several of the other matches ended at about the same time within 10 to 15 minutes.
Hayden Winjum won her first singles match 6-3, 6-2 for a nice win over East Grand Forks’ Maggie Dietrich. “That was a nice win for Hayden,” said Coach Brekken. “Hayden had her frustrated and kept returning shots and getting points.”
Emma Osborn continues to play solid tennis with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over East Grand Forks’ Lila Rothenberger. “Emma played a great match and she is liking singles more and more,” said Coach Brekken. “She is a versatile player and c
Catherine Tiedemann and Hannah Lindemoen won their first doubles match by beating Brynn Havis and Kendal Rand 6-2, 6-2. “The girls played well and they gelled well today and came out strong,” said Coach Brekken. “They seemed to enjoy playing with each other.”
East Grand Forks won the second doubles match with Katelyn Farder and Kennedy Barris beat Crookston’s Halle Bruggeman and Emma Gunderson 6-3, 6-2. “They leveled their doubles out with three pretty even teams,” said Coach Brekken. “Halle and Emma played tough and moved around well.”
East Grand Forks also won the third doubles match with Aleah Oshie and Kendra Emery beating Crookston’s Macy Fee and Brekken Tull 7-5, 6-2. “They had a good start, but East Grand Forks had some pretty good net players,” said Coach Brekken. “They hung in there, but they might have been a little frustrated.”
The last match on the courts was fourth singles and Crookston’s Abby Borowicz won the first set 6-0, but the second set was a marathon and Abby was able to outlast her opponent to win the second set 7-6 with a 7-2 tie-breaker to give Crookston a 5-2 victory. “That was great to get Abby a win in singles,” said Coach Brekken. “Abby played well, and when things weren’t going well in the second, she picked up her play to get the win.”
Crookston improves to 6-1 on the year and will host Detroit Lakes at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
