CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL ENVIROTHON TEAMS PLACE 13TH AND 16TH AT STATE

The Crookston High School Envirothon teams competed at the Minnesota State competition this Spring. They finished 13th and 16th in the state.

“The event was held virtually this year which made things challenging,” said Coach Wes Hanson. “This event is an academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soil and land use, wildlife, and a current environmental topic that changes each year.”

The current issue topic for 2021 was, “Water Resource Management—Local Solutions, Local Control.” Students were required to compose and present a 10-minute oral presentation related to the current events issue, and answer questions from a panel of judges. Test questions for each of the five resource stations were prepared by natural resource professionals from various organizations throughout the state.

Hopkins High School won the competition with a score of 140.  The Crookston team comprised of Anke Wiersma, Ella Weber, Zara Baig, Ava Lopez, and Ainsley Boucher scored 103.67 points while the team of Halle Bruggeman, Emily Funk, Linnea French, Madison Hoiland, and Emily Balboa finished in 16th place with a score of 99.67 Respectively.

Coach Hanson added, “These teams worked very hard and I’m proud of their efforts.”
