The Crookston MathCounts Team received a send-off at the High School this morning from the entire school to the State Math competition in Plymouth, Minnesota. The five students are Ashton Hoffman, Sam Widseth, Peter Wiersma, Leah Johanneck, Jace Bruggeman, and their coach Andrea Adrian.
The send-off began with the team visiting Highland School for a small send-off from the staff and students. Then, they returned to the High School to walk through the school with the Pirate Pep Band following them to receive high fives and good luck wishes from their peers. They began their long trip to Plymouth with a convoy led by Crookston Police Officer Don Rasicot, which included the team and coach, followed by a Crookston Firetruck that led them through downtown Crookston on their way out of town.
MathCounts Coach Andrea Adrian expressed her gratitude to the school, students, and staff for their support of the team and her and the team’s excitement to face many challenging teams at State’s. “We just got information that 121 students are coming to compete at the Competition from 40 schools,” Adrian said, “Hopefully, we can do well against these 40 schools, and we’re very excited to compete with them.” This is the first State competition for these students as they will be facing off against many other schools in Minnesota, such as Fertile High School.
The MathCounts team will participate in a complimentary dinner and STEM activities in mixed groups to meet and work with fellow contestants in Count Down Rounds to test their speed, skill, and ability to find answers. The competition will begin on Saturday, March 12, with the results being announced at the end of the day. The four top-scoring individuals will then advance to the National MathCounts Competition in May. Stay tuned to KROX Radio and KROXAM.com for more updates on the MathCounts competition results.
