The annual Crookston Hockey Alumni scrimmages are back for another year of games with the Crookston High School, Central High School, Crookston Cathedral School, and the Mount hockey students and alums this Friday, December 23, at the Crookston Sports Center. Four games will be played between 2:30 and 8:15 p.m., and the event is free for all who wish to spectate.
The first game will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be the alumni that graduated from the odd years from 2012 to 2022 (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021) facing off against the even number years (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022). The second game will be in the same format with alumni that graduated from 2011 and earlier, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The third game will have the Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team face off against the girls’ alumni team at 5:30 p.m., and the Pirate Boys Hockey team will play the boys’ alumni team at 7:00 p.m. “There are no tryouts. You just come, and you can register online with me or at the door; most people register at the door. Any alumni are welcome, and I think this year we have some that are at least 40 years out of high school that I’ve seen coming back,” Steve Biermaier explained. “One is one of my goalies back in the day, but anybody, I don’t care what year you graduated, but if you’re an alumni, you can play.” The event will provide goalie equipment to players looking to play goalie for the games but requests that other position players bring their own hockey equipment.
The event is free for all spectators who wish to watch the games, but there is a $10 entry fee for alums to participate in the games and the after-game social at the Crookston Eagles. “All spectators are free, and if you are an alumni and you pay the $10, you get into the Johnny Holmes band performance at the Crookston Eagles that night for free. I will have a list that I bring up to the Eagles, so all of the alumni get in free if they pay the $10 at the games.” Biermaier also noted that concessions would be available to the spectators during the games for them to enjoy during the games. After the games, all alumni and spectators ages 21 and older can come for a social at the Crookston Eagles, where they can meet and socialize with players from other years and see a performance by Johnny Holmes from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. “So always after the games, we have a big social somewhere, and this year it’s at the Eagles again, and Johnny Holmes will be playing until 1:00 a.m. It’s always a great night, and we thank the Eagles for helping get Johnny signed up, and it’s just a nice fundraiser for the Pirate Girls and Boys hockey teams as well,” Steve Biermaier explained. “As far as I know, Jake Fee has the bar open with some specials going on that night, and the band starts at 9:00 p.m., so come up and join us. It’s a good day of hockey and a fun night at the Eagles to talk about old times.” Spectators are also welcome to donate any money to the Crookston Pirates Boys and Girls hockey teams at the door or by sending in checks made out to Pirate Hockey.
