The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team struggled with consistency as the Ada-Borup-West Cougars used several smaller runs to win the match 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-19) at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST SET
ABW took a 3-0 lead to start the match before Crookston got a point on a Cougar service error. Brynna Kopecky followed with two aces, and the Pirates took a 4-3 lead on an ABW attack error. Crookston hit out of bounds for a 4-4 tie to spark a 3-0 Cougar run for a 7-4 lead. Crookston battled back, and after an Abi Bruley kill, the Pirates trailed 9-7. ABW dominated the rest of the way as they outscored Crookston 16-4 for a 25-11 victory.
SECOND SET
ABW took a 2-0 lead with an Olivia Hanson kill and an Emerrsyn Borgen ace. Crookston battled back with a Rilynn Aubol kill to spark a 3-1 run for a 3-3 tie. The teams were also tied at 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 before ABW put a nice 5-1 run together behind two Borgen aces for a 13-9 lead. Crookston’s Aubol stopped the run with a kill. ABW answered with another 5-1 run with an ace, a Pirate attack error, a Pirate rotation error, a Blakely Stene kill, and a Hanson ace for an 18-11 lead. Crookston battled back with kills from Adalyn Hanson and an ace from Lana Peterson. After ABW hit out of bounds, Peterson served up another ace, and Morgan Boll capped a 6-1 Pirate run to get within a 19-17 deficit. ABW finished the set on a 6-2 run and won the set on a Hanson kill for a 25-19 victory.
THIRD SET
The teams were tied at 2 before Crookston had a serve into the net, and that sparked a 6-1 Cougar run for an 8-3 lead. Crookston stopped the run with a Bruley kill, but ABW went on a 4-0 run behind back-to-back kills by Macie Thornton for a 12-4 lead. Crookston’s Bruley had a big block to stop the run, and after two Cougar points, Lyla Oman had a big kill, and Ella Anderson had an ace to get within a 14-7 deficit. Trailing 15-7, Crookston took advantage of five Cougar errors before Cecelia Newquist had a big block and a Brynna Kopecky ace to get within a 16-15 deficit. ABW countered with four straight points before Bruley had another kill to bring the Pirates back within 20-16. ABW outscored the Pirates 5-3 the rest of the set to win on a Thornton kill for a 25-19 victory to win the match 3-0.
Crookston drops to 1-4 on the year and will host Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Thursday. You can hear the match on KROX Radio. ABW improves to 3-5 on the year and will host Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Tuesday.
