Several Crookston High School Visual Art students competed on Wednesday, April 20, in the 2022 Region 8A Visual Arts Festival held at Warroad. 12 schools from Northwest Minnesota, ranging from Warroad to Ada to East Grand Forks to Thief River Falls competed.
Students were ranked according to MSHSL criteria. Deserving students can be awarded prizes from Excellence, Superior, and Spotlight in the Arts Award, which essentially means Best in Category. This award advances them to the State Art Exhibit.
Emily Balboa won four Superior awards in Painting (Timeless Beauty, Baroque Painting: Mimesis and Faith) and Drawing (The Lion and the Lamb, vida y muerte), and also earned an Excellence in Mixed Media (Love is Addictive). Emily also achieved a perfect score in Painting (Baroque Painting: Mimesis and Faith).
Luke Noah earned two Superior awards in Painting (Snowy, Eject). Both of Luke’s paintings also received perfect scores.
Alexia Threatt won a Superior (Birds Flying Parallel) and an Excellence (The Sheep Who Cried Wolf for the Boy) in the category of Ceramics. Both pieces were ceramic tile mosaics.
Morgen Arguelles won a Superior award in Drawing (Far From Home).
Christina Lisov won an Excellence for her watercolor (I Love You, Mum) from the Painting category.
The Visual Arts Department competes at several competitions throughout the late winter/spring. January saw the MSU-Moorhead Competition. Alexia Threatt was judged the Best in the Category of Ceramics there. The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council will hold an art show later this spring. Congratulations to the CHS Art Department for their hard work and efforts during this competition season.
