Brett Schulz of Crookston is undergoing several surgeries this week after being badly burned in a work-related accident at American Crystal Sugar Company last week. Schulz, who received burns to over 40 percent of his body, including to his face, hands, back, and legs, was flown to Hennepin Medical Center last week in a medically induced coma, according to his Caring Bridge page.
In an update on Caring Bridge, Schulz’s wife Jill wrote that Schulz is undergoing surgeries this week. Tuesday was on his legs, Wednesday on his back and buttocks, and Thursday on his hands and right arm. She also wrote that at least two more surgeries are planned for next week.
An account has been set up at United Valley Bank in Crookston in honor of Brett as he undergoes treatment. He is expected to be at the Hennepin County Medical Center for two to three months between surgeries and recovery. Brett and Jill have two daughters Katelynn and Taylor.
In a statement to KROX, American Crystal Sugar said they are monitoring Schulz’s condition and that their concern and prayers are with him and his family. The statement is below –
“American Crystal’s Occupational Health Nurse is closely monitoring our injured employee’s condition through his family members and healthcare providers. Because of privacy, we cannot make any other comments about his condition. All of our employees are important to us, and when one of our team members is injured, it affects all of us. Our concern and prayers are with him and his family.”
