The Crookston Pirate Boys’ Basketball team played a solid game, but had too many turnovers in a 69-65 overtime loss to the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels in a Section 8AA game played at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game on a 7-3 run with four points from Hunter Nicholas and a Jack Everett three-pointer. DGF responded with baskets from Grant Anderson and Kade Swenson to tie the game at 7-7 with 13:54 left in the half. The teams were tied at 10 and 12 before Crookston’s Nicholas made a free throw for a 13-12 lead and that sparked a run of 10 straight lead changes and Crookston led 24-22 after a Matthew Contreras three-pointer with 4:13 remaining in the half. Crookston’s offense went cold as DGF went on a 10-0 run with five points from Camden Schriber, a Mason Bjerken and Kade Swenson added baskets, and Grant Anderson made a free throw for a 32-24 lead with 18 seconds left in the half. Crookston had the last possession and Jack Everett made a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 32-27 deficit going into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
DGF led 37-31 early in the half when Nicholas scored in the paint and Everett made a three-pointer to get within a 37-34 deficit three minutes into the half. Crookston trailed 41-37 when Tyler Michaelson and Contreras made back-to-back three-pointers for a 43-41 lead. The teams were tied at 43, 46, 48, 51, and 53. DGF forced Crookston into a turnover and made a basket. Crookston turned the ball over again and DGF made another basket. After a third straight Crookston turnover, DGF scored two more points and after a fourth turnover in a row, DGF added another basket and took a 59-53 lead with 3:24 left in regulation. Crookston took better care of the ball and Reggie Winjum made a three-pointer. After a Rebel basket, Crookston’s Nicholas made back to back baskets to get within a 61-60 deficit with 1:13 remaining. DGF answered with a big basket by Mason Bjerken before Crookston’s Nicholas made a free throw. Crookston stopped DGF and the Rebels fouled several times to wear down the clock to 13 seconds. Crookston brought the ball up the floor and Winjum drove the lane and his shot hit off the front of the rim and Nicholas grabbed the rebound and put it back in right before the buzzer sounded and the game was tied at 53-53 to force overtime.
OVERTIME-
DGF’s Quincy Cox made a jump shot in the first minute of overtime before Crookston turned the ball over on two straight posessions. The Rebel’s Grant Anderson followed with a basket before Crookston turned the ball over again. The Pirates finally got on the board with a Nicholas basket with 1:40 left in overtime to get within 67-65 deficit. DGf didn’t score, but Crookston turned the ball over two more times before DGF’s Thomas Rehder made two free throws with 11.7 seconds left in the game and the Rebels won 69-65.
Crookston drops to 3-8 on the year and will travel to Barnesville on Friday. DGF improves to 10-3 on the season.
