The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team had an offensive explosion against the Park Rapids Panthers, and Garrett Fischer scored 6 goals as the Pirates pulled away for a 9-1 victory at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena in Park Rapids on Monday night.
FIRST PERIOD
Park Rapids started out hot defensively, preventing the Pirates from making any moves on offense. The Panthers outshot the Pirates 4 to 1 in the first 7 minutes of the game, but all of them were stopped by Brady Chandler. Eventually, the incredibly reliable Garrett Fischer opened up the scoring for the Pirates, hitting hit spot perfectly to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, the Pirates scored again, this time from Greyson Ecker, as he put away a rebound on a shot from Isaiah Donarski to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Though the Panthers got more shots on goal in a row, they couldn’t cash in, and Park Rapids’ final shot of the period turned into a breakaway for the Pirates, and Jay Reese scored to complete the entire top line scoring in the first period, as the Pirates take a 3-0 lead into the second period.
SECOND PERIOD
In the second period, the Pirates didn’t wait around before adding more goals to their tally, as they got a power play within the first two minutes of the period, and Garrett Fischer was able to cash in, putting the Pirates up 4-0. Then, for the second time, the Pirates scored two goals in under a minute, as Jay Reese cashed in his second of the night, putting the Pirates up 5-0. 3 minutes later, the second line finally added on, as Gavin Aakhus put away a lovely rebound to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead. Their final goal of the period was yet another Garrett Fisher goal, his 4th of the night to give the Pirates a 7-0 lead. Brady Chandler kept the clean sheet going, but the Pirates committed a penalty at the end of the period, so at the start of the 3rd, the Panthers would have 51 seconds on the power play.
THIRD PERIOD
In the third period, running time took place so the action was few and far between. That did not stop Garrett Fischer, however, as the man who already had 4 goals added two more to his tally, one at 3:44 and one at 12:29, and that gave the Pirates a 9-1 advantage. Unfortunately, the shutout was not completed, as in the final minute, a slashing penalty allowed Chad Pinoniemi to score top shelf on Brady Chandler. This put the Panthers on the board, but the Pirates were still able to cruise to a 9-1 victory.
Crooskton improves to 8-2-1 on the season and will face Thief River Falls tomorrow night. Park Rapids is now 1-9 on the year.
