CROOKSTON PIRATE BOY’S SOCCER SHUTOUT AT HILLCREST

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer failed to score for the second straight match in a 4-0 loss against Fergus Falls Hillcrest Academy in a Section 8A match played in Fergus Falls.

In the 18th minute, Severin Breck opened the scoring with an assist from Jowell Seymour giving the Comets a 1-0 lead. Breck scored his second goal of the match in the 33rd minute taking a pass from Kristian Maestad and firing the shot into the net giving Hillcrest a 2-0 lead. The hosts added one final goal before halftime with a strike by Kristian Maestad putting the Comets up 3-0. “I thought we played really, really well in those first twenty minutes of the game,” explained Crookston head coach Lon Boike. “We’ve been spending a little bit more time on defense in practice, and I thought the boys did a really nice job of finding boys in their area and marking up. The first goal that they got was really one guy in between four of our defenders and just a lack of communication. Nobody picked him up, and he got the goal. The other two goals in the half were similar things. I think we may have gotten a little tired late in the half. I was overall pleased with how we had played in the first half even though they got a couple of goals on us.”

Crookston settled down defensively in the second half with goalkeeper Kaleb Thingelstad making nine saves. Fergus Falls Hillcrest did manage one final breakthrough 63:03 into the match when Zajen McArton sent a pass to Jowell Seymour for the fourth and final goal closing out Hillcrest’s 4-1 win. “I thought we played exceptionally well in the second half,” noted Boike. “They outscored us 1-0, but I thought we did a really nice job. We did some moving people around and taking a look at different people in different spots. Noah Dragseth went back and played some defense for us. I thought he did a really nice job there. We’ll take a look at different things coming down here. That’s something to build off of heading into this weekend. We just need to be a little bit sharper with our passing and our first and second touches with the ball. Overall, outside of three or four lapses, we played really, really well on defense. Hopefully, we can put a few ‘Ws’ on the board here before the end of the season.”

Crookston falls to 0-11 on the year. The Pirates return to the field on Friday when the Pirates host Hibbing at 3:30 P.M. Hillcrest Academy improves to 5-2-1 on the season.
