CROOKSTON BOYS SOCCER SCORES FIRST BUT DETROIT LAKES COMES BACK TO WIN

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team scored a goal 122 seconds into the match, but Detroit Lakes scored the last two goals for a 2-1 victory in a Section 8A match played under the lights in Detroit Lakes.

Crookston couldn’t have scripted a better start with Jacob Brunelle scoring 2:02 into the match. “We came out with a lot of intensity, and we had an opportunity early and took care of it,” said Pirate Coach Lon Boike. “We had the numbers and Noah had a nice pass and Jacob buried it for the lead early.”
The lead didn’t last long for Crookston as Detroit Lakes answered seven minutes later with a goal by Garret Bakken. “That was a nice play,” said Coach Boike. “They had a guy open and scored a nice goal.”  The teams battled the rest of the half with some yellow cards given out because of the physicality.  Detroit Lakes took advantage of a Pirate defensive miscue late in the first half and scored their second goal of the game.  “We were pushing up on the defense and got a little too far,” said Coach Boike. “They were able to take advantage of it and scored the go-ahead goal.”  Detroit Lakes took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the teams continued to battle, and the Pirates didn’t back down and played hard and played a solid half.  “It was a bruising battle,” said Coach Boike. “It was a very physical game with a lot of yellow cards, but we continued to play hard and didn’t back down.”  Crookston had a few shots on goal, but they couldn’t get the equalizer in the net, and Detroit Lakes held on for the 2-1 victory.  Crookston’s Kaleb Thingelstad came up big in goal with 17 saves.  “It was a well-played match,” said Coach Boike. “The guys played hard, and we have a few guys that are dinged up and battling some minor injuries, but I was proud of how hard they played the entire game.”
Crookston drops to 0-8 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.  Detroit Lakes improves to 2-6 on the year with both wins coming against Crookston.
