The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team lost a hard-fought 4-3 dual to Minnewaska Area in the first round of the Section 8A Boys Tennis team tournament played in Detroit Lakes. “It was a good match. Every position we went the distance in all of them,” said Coach Brekken. “The final match was a great match, but Minnewaska was just a little deeper and we played a very good match today.”
Minnewaska area took an early 2-0 lead after they won the third and fourth singles matches. Crookston bounced back with a victory at third doubles with Jack Garmen and Mason LaPlante winning 6-2, 7-5. “They played a good match for us,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken.
Minnewaska Area won the next match with a victory at second singles to take a 3-1 lead with three matches remaining (First singles, and first and second doubles).
The second doubles match was the next match to finish and Robert and Tanner Janorschke won a hard-fought and long match 6-4, 6-3 to bring Crookston within a 3-2 deficit. “Tanner and Bobby played a great match for us today and they were consistent throughout the match,” said Coach Brekken. “They were able to pick each other up and played a solid match.”
The first doubles team of Blake Fee and Logan Wardner won their first set 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 to win their match to tie the team score at 3-3. “They had a great start and let their opponents get back into it, but they finished the match in impressive fashion.”
Nick Garmen won his first set 6-2 and lost the second set 7-5 to force a third set. The marathon match continued and it seemed like no matter what kind of shot Garmen hit, Minnewaska’s Tate Reichman had an answer and Nick came up short 6-1 in the third set and Minnewaska Area won the match 4-3. “That was our longest match of the day and it was probably close to three hours and both of them played a great match,” said Coach Brekken. “It was as tight as it could be and Nick played a great match and might have run out of gas. It was the best tennis that I have seen Nick play this year, but it seemed like Tate was able to return every shot in the third set and give him credit, he is a great player.”
It was a tough loss, but the Pirate coach was extremely happy with how his team played. “I couldn’t have asked for a better effort from the guys today. They all played hard and really played good tennis,” said Coach Brekken. “We were playing our best tennis of the year at the end of the season and after the slow start and getting everybody healthy and we finished strong, so that was great to see.”
Crookston finished the season with a 4-11 dual record and the Section 8A Individual Tennis tournament will start around Noon on Tuesday in Detroit Lakes.
