Martin and Stinar score first varsity goals, LaPlante gets 3 as Pirate Girls Hockey beats Detroit Lakes

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team had first varsity goals from Ava Martin and Jensen Stinar, a hat trick by Emma LaPlante, and the 14th career shutout for Kambelle Freije, breaking Amy Burkes program record of 13 as they cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game played in Mayville, North Dakota. Crookston has a coop with Mayville-Portland in girls hockey and plays one game a year in Mayville, so they get a “home” game in front of their family and friends. The Pirate varsity team has two players from Mayville with Parker Strand and Hadley Verwest.

First Period
The teams came out offensive-minded, as each team had one great scoring chance in the first two minutes of the game, but neither team was able to score. Crookston’s defense picked up their play after giving up two shots in the first two minutes. The Pirate offense also picked up their play as Jensen Stinar slid a pass back to Kaylie Clauson at the point. Clauson let a shot go, and a save was made, but the puck bounced in front of the net, and Crookston’s Ava Martin got the rebound and knocked it in the net to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Crookston continued their solid play as they had a few more shots on the net. Crookston’s Addie Fee got a shot on goal, and the puck was loose in front of the goal. Jocelyn Field swooped in and slapped the puck in to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Crookston continued to pepper the net with shots, but the Laker goaltender Talyn Johnson made save after save. Late in the period, Crookston’s Fee slid a pass to a streaking Field, who caught the pass and flew into the Laker zone all alone, her shot hit the crossbar, and the Pirates led 2-0 going into the first intermission.

Second Period
Crookston’s offense broke the game open in the second period. They scored 2:48 into the period as Jensen Stinar scored on a rebound for a 3-0 lead. Just under five minutes later was the point in the game that the Pirates blew the game open with four goals in less than three minutes. The first of the four goals came when Emma LaPlante skated from the boards around the circle and rifled a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Laker goalie to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead. 10 seconds later, Crookston struck again as Jocelyn Field found Ashlyn Bailey at the point, and she let a shot go and kept it low, and it found the back of the net for a 5-0 lead. 41 seconds later, Crookston struck again as Addie Fee had a shot on goal and the puck was in front, and Jocelyn Field swooped in and knocked the puck in to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead. The final goal of the period game less than two minutes later, as Emma LaPlante skated through the zone, found an opening, and placed it in the upper left-hand corner of the net for her second goal of the game, and Crookston had a 7-0 lead with 7:03 left in the period. Detroit Lakes called a timeout, and that settled things down for the rest of the period.
Neither team had a penalty up to this point in the game, but that changed when Detroit Lakes committed two penalties, and Crookston committed one in a two-minute span. There was no scoring the rest of the period and Crookston took a 7-0 lead into the second intermission.

Third Period
Crookston came out of the locker room buzzing at the start of the final period. It only took the Pirates 1:45 to score. Emma LaPlante circled through the Laker zone and let a wrist shot go, and you probably guessed where it went…..that’s right……the upper left-hand corner of the net, and the Pirates led 8-0. A little over a minute later, Crookston struck again as Jocelyn Field put a shot on goal, and the puck bounced off to the side, and Fee slapped the puck into the net for a 9-0 Pirate lead 3:17 into the period. Crookston rotated all three lines throughout the period and with 5:20 left in the period, Detroit Lakes got their first shot on goal. Crookston held on for a shutout and that gives Kambelle Freije the Pirate Girls Hockey career shutout record with 13, breaking Amy Burke’s record of 12.

Crookston improves to 5-1 on the year and will host East Grand Forks in a big Section 8A game on Monday. You can watch the game on KROX TV. Detroit Lakes drops to 3-7 on the year.
