PIRATE GIRLS TRACK FINISHES 2ND, BOYS FINISH 5TH AT EGF MEET

The Crookston Pirate Girls track team finished second out of 12 teams while the Pirate Boys finished fifth out of 13 teams at the East Grand Forks Invitational this afternoon at the East Grand Forks Senior High track. East Grand Forks won both the boys and girls divisions.

GIRLS –
Hayden Winjum, Katherine Geist, and Jada Dillabough delivered strong performances for the Pirates who tallied five first-place finishes. Hayden Winjum finished atop the podium in the 800 meters race with a time of 2:31.04 while also clearing 33’5.5” feet in the triple jump for a pair of first-place finishes. “Hayden did an excellent job today,” said Crookston head coach Amy Boll. “She’s only triple-jumped two times and she came out of the gate and did a very good job in the triple jump. In the 800 she battled. She was battling at the end of the race and it was so fun to watch her. She had a tremendous day.”
Katherine Geist continued her dominance in the distance races winning both the 1600 meters and 3200 meters with times of 5:17.83 and 11.08.22 respectively. “When she ran in the 3200,” explained Boll, “she ran against the girl from Thompson and they ran with the boys. It was so fun to watch because the last round and a half those two were just battling for first place. The girl had passed Kat, and she had come within the last 200 meters, but Kat just buried down and deep, she pushed with all her might and ended up taking the girl from Thompson. It was fun to watch Kat run with another person and be pushed like that.”
Jada Dillabough won her second gold in the shot put this week after throwing 34’6” besting the competition. “Jada has been doing really good,” said Boll. “There are a few things we’re going to work on next week to help push her to the next level for the shot put. She had a nice, consistent performance today.”
Emma Borowicz took second place in the pole vault clearing eight feet while also contributing to the Pirates 4×400 relay team with Kailee Magsam, Thea Oman, Rachel Hefta, and Borowicz for a second place finish with a time of 4:22.16. “Emma had an exceptional run in the 4×400,” noted Boll. “Emma Borowicz had a great day. She really closed the space between her and the first place runner. She caught up to her and had passed her, but the other girl just barely edged her at the end. It was an extremely exciting race for that 4×400 relay team.”
The Pirates 4×800 relay team also claimed second place as Thea Oman, Anke Weirsma, Hailey Spivey, and Hayden Winjum combined for a finish in 10:46.83. “All four of those girls ran really good times,” added Boll. “I suspect that as we keep working on that race, their times will keep diminishing.” Breanna Kressin returned to the 100 hurdles healed from an injury and looked healthy racing in 16.68 seconds for second place. “That was fun,” said Boll. “That was the first time Breanna has run the hurdles since her ankle injury. I know she feels that it wasn’t as smooth as she would have liked to have done, but once you hurt yourself and get back on the horse and run the hurdles again there’s a lot to be said for running them the first time after an injury.” Overall, Boll was pleased with another successful performance from her team, “I’m proud of how our girls did overall, we had a few girls get their own personal bests today. When the kids get their own personal bests, you couldn’t be happier than that.”

BOYS –
The Pirates were led by Noah Kiel who breezed through 200 meters in 23.43 seconds to take first place in the event. “It was a good race for him,” said Crookston head coach Wayne Folkers. “He’s really pumped up about the 200 meters for some reason, he really likes that race and he’s running it really well right now.”
The 4×100 meter relay team of Isaiah Barlow, Jacob Brunelle, Sam Overgaard, and Noah Kiel who combined for a time of 48.00 seconds to claim the silver in the relay. “We ran a really good 4×100,” added Folkers. “Last meet we ran Noah in the 4×200, but we’re kind of thinking that our 4×100 is going to be our better relay. They did really well. They’ve got to work on their handoffs a little bit, but then they’ll close the gap a little bit too.”
Noah Kiel earned another medal in the 100 meters running in 11.60 seconds to take the bronze in the event. “He even mentioned that he was a little bit nervous and didn’t get as good a start as he wanted to, mainly because of the disqualification (on Tuesday).”
Jaden Lubarski ran another successful 800-meter race winning a medal for the second time this week finishing in 2:09.73. “He ran a 2:09 and he came off talking, ‘ok, next week I’m cutting down and I’m going to get lower.”
Karsten Isaacson wrapped up Crookston’s top four finishes clearing 5’3” in the high jump to earn a fourth-place finish. “Starting out this year, I really was not sure,” summarized Folkers. “We had some key people that we lost from last year’s group. This group is getting better each week and that’s all you can ask of kids, just get better each week. I’m happy about that and I look forward to next week and the week after.”

The Pirate track teams return to action next Tuesday they host the Crookston Invitational on the East Grand Forks track beginning at 3:30 p.m.
