Crookston Pirate Volleyball falls to Kelliher/Northome

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team ran into a power and impressive duo of Northome/Kelliher juniors and they led the way to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-11) victory to spoil parents night at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST SET
Northome/Kelliher (NK) started the match strong with five straight points. Crookston started the set with a serve into the net and a double hit. NK followed with an ace from Cloey Buentemier, which was followed by two Crookston attack errors for a 5-0 Mustang lead.
Crookston battled back to take an 8-7 lead behind a Madi Abrams ace and a Joey Nesseth kill, and several Mustang errors. The teams were tied at 9, 10, 13, and 14 before Crookston had two attacks go out of bounds. Crookston’s Mackenzie Funk had a block for a kill to get within 16-15 before the Mustangs ended the set on a 9-3 run. With NK leading 19-16, they rattled off four straight kills with two by Kate Thayer for a 23-16 lead. After two NK errors, they finished the set with a Cloy Buentemier kill and a Kylie Binkley kill for a 25-18 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
“I thought the first set was fun to watch,” said Pirate Coach Katie Morgan. “We came from behind, which we hadn’t done this year. One of our goals tonight was to get over 15 points, and that was awesome to see the girls pull off the mini-win. They really started smoking the ball and they played great at the end to win the set.”

SECOND SET
Crookston jumped out to a 3-1 lead behind an Abrams ace and two NK attack errors. “It has been fun to see Madi Abrams step into that role,” said Coach Morgan. “She had mono the first couple of weeks so she was kind of slow getting back into it, but it has been fun to see her get touches and good contact.” NK came back to take a 4-3 lead while taking advantage of a Pirate attack error, a Thayer kill, and an ace from Joy Adegun. The teams battled back and forth, and the Mustangs led 9-7. NK dominated the rest of the set as Binkley had four kills and an ace to spark a 16-4 run to finish the set. Adegun added a kill before Thayer had a pair of impressive kills. With NK leading 24-11, Adegun served an ace to win the set 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. “They started to get in their groove and started getting quicker sets, and we just couldn’t compete with it,” said Coach Morgan. “They definitely got hot and we couldn’t stop them.”

THIRD SET
NK took a 4-1 lead behind to kills and an ace from Binkley. Crookston stopped the run when Joey Nesseth had a kill. A few points later, NK led 8-5 when they went on a 12-0 run behind five Thayer aces and a kill. Binkley added four kills combined with two Pirate attack errors for a 20-5 lead. “Everything was going right for them and it was an impressive stretch for them,” said Coach Morgan. “We couldn’t get out of it. We were struggling with our serve receive and weren’t moving our feet.” The run was over when NK served into the net. The teams exchanged points the rest of the match as the Mustangs coasted to a 25-11 victory to win the match 3-0. “We saw some more good things from the girls and we need to keep building on that.”

Crookston drops to 0-14 on the year and will travel to Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Tuesday. Northome/Kelliher improves to 9-11 on the year.
