The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team competed in the Mayville-Portland Quadrangular and lost to Hillsboro/Central Valley 38-24, lost to Carrington 48-27, and tied Mayville-Portland 33-33 but lost the dual because they had more forfeits.
CROOKSTON VS HILLSBORO/CENTRAL VALLEY –
Crookston had a solid start to the match as Mauricio Arriaga started the match with a takedown and dominated for the next minute and was able to win by a pin in 93 seconds to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead.
At 114 pounds, Gabe Perala trailed 8-0 after the first period and was able to get a reversal early in the second period, but his opponent was able to get a pin to win the match. Hillsboro-Central Valley won the next three matches to build a 20-6 lead through 139 pounds.
Crookston’s Lucas Perala stopped the HCV run with a win by pin in the third period at 145 pounds. Lucas trailed 2-1 after the first period, but had a reversal and a takedown to take a 5-3 lead going into the third period. Lucas continued to battle and was able to get the pin with 42 seconds left in the match to bring the Pirates within a 20-12 deficit.
HCV won the next match by a pin and then won the 160 pound match by forfeit for a 32-12 lead.
At 172 pounds, Carter Coauette, who won the 150th match of his career on Tuesday, continued his winning ways as he led 9-2 before winning by pin at 3:38 to get the Pirates within a 32-18 deficit.
Crookston lost by forfeit at 215 before Riley Helgeson won the heavyweight match in impressive fashion with a pin in 34 seconds, but HCV won the team portion of the match with a 38-24 victory.
Crookston drops to 2-7 in duals on the year.

CROOKSTON vs CARRINGTON –
The match started at 114 pounds, and Carrington won the match by a pin in the second period to take a 6-0 lead. Crookston was open in the next two weights, and Carrington picked up 12 more points. At 133 pounds, Crookston’s Jaron Knutson got the Pirates on the board with the only match that went the full six minutes. Jaron was tied at 4-4 at the end of the first period. He was solid in the second period as he outscored his opponent 5-1 to take a 9-5 lead into the third. The only scoring in the third period was a Knutson takedown, and he held on for an 11-5 victory.
Gavyn Hlucny gave the Pirates the lead when he jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then won by a pin in over a minute to bring the Pirates within an 18-9 deficit. Lucas Perala kept the Pirates’ winning streak going at 145 pounds. Perala jumped out to a 4-2 lead and picked up a win by pin to get within an 18-15 deficit. Carrington won the next two matches by pin and forfeit to take a 30-15 lead.
At 172 pounds, Crookston’s Carter Coauette dominated and took an 11-1 lead into the second period. Carter continued to dominate and won by a pin 30 seconds into the second period. Carrington took a 42-21 lead. The Pirates added a forfeit win at heavyweight.
Carrington won the 107-pound match by pin to win the match 48-27.
Crookston drops to 2-8 on the year.

CROOKSTON vs MAYVILLE/PORTLAND –
The final match of the night proved to be the most exciting as far as team score goes. The match started at 121 pounds and Crookston was open at the first two weights. At 133 pounds, Jaron Knutson went the distance for the second straight match. The match was tied at 2-2 after two periods, but he was outscored 5-2 in the second period after a reversal and three near-fall points and lost a hard-fought match 7-3 and Mayville-Portland had an 15-0 lead.
Gavyn Hlucny got Crookston on the board with an early takedown that led to a pin in 37 seconds. Lucas Perala followed suit and built a 7-1 lead before winning by a pin late in the first period. The win was Lucas’ third win of the night, and Crookston trailed 15-12.
Mayville-Portland won the next two matches by a pin and a forfeit for a 27-12 lead. Once again, Carter Coauette got the Pirates back on track as he had two takedowns before getting a pin in 92 seconds. At 189 pounds, Miles Corneille picked up his second-ever varsity win with an exciting 8-7 victory. Miles trailed 2-1 after the first period, but after the second period, he trailed 7-3. Miles started down and scored a point on an escape and followed with a takedown and two more near-fall points to get the 8-7 victory to bring the Pirates within a 27-21 deficit.
Both teams were open at 215 pounds, and Crookston tied the match when Riley Helgeson scored a takedown and three near-fall points before getting a pin in 57 seconds.
Crookston eighth grader Mauricio Arriaga put the Pirates in the lead at 107 pounds. Mauricio built a 6-1 lead after the first period and extended the lead in the second period to 11-3 before winning the match by pin at 3:11 to give the Pirates a 33-27 going into the final match.
Mayville-Portland won the 114 pound match by pin to tie the team score at 33-33. To decide who gets the dual win, they went to criteria, and Crookston had three forfeits compared to Mayville-Portland’s zero forfeits, so Mayville-Portland won by criteria.
Crookston drops to 2-9 on the year and will travel to Minnewaska Area on Friday.
