The #2 ranked Barnesville Trojans didn’t seem to be phased by the one-hour lightning delay and scored on five of their first six offensive series and cruised to a 57-0 victory over the Crookston Pirate Football team in a Section 8AA matchup played in Barnesville.
FIRST QUARTER
Barnesville started with the ball and after seven plays they turned the ball over on downs. “We had a great start on defense,” said Pirate Coach Scott Butt. “They physically wore us down the rest of the way.” Crookston’s first offensive series was a three-and-out and after a 28-yard punt, Barnesville had the ball at the Crookston 47 yard line. The Trojans started the drive with an 11-yard carry for Aaron Schiefert which was followed by a 21-yard carry from quarterback Adam Tonsfeldt. Three plays later, Barnesville scored on a Cameron Heng three-yard run and after the extra point kick, the Trojans led 7-0.
Barnesville got the ball back after another Crookston three-and-out and they scored on the first play of the drive when Tonsfeldt sprinted 64 yards for a touchdown and after the extra point failed, the Trojans led 13-0. Crookston had to punt after another three and out and the Crookston punt only went 11 yards and Barnesville had the ball at the Crookston 35 yard line. Barnesville ran three plays and Tonsfeldt scored on a six-yard run for his second touchdown of the game and after a two-point conversion, they led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. “They dominated play and their defense got off the ball and hit us in the mouth and we don’t have the horses Barnesville does,” said Coach Butt. “
SECOND QUARTER
Crookston’s first offensive series of the second quarter was another three and out and after a 17-yard punt, Barnesville had the ball at the Crookston 38 yard line. The first Trojan play was a seven-yard carry, which was followed by a beautiful Tonsfeldt pass to tight end Hunter Zenzen (going to Iowa State to play football next year), who caught the ball over his shoulder as he went into the endzone and Barnesville took a 28-0 lead with 9:40 left in the first half.
Crookston’s offense continued to sputter and had to punt again and after a nice 30-yard Brooks Butt punt and Barnesville’s Tonsfeldt took the ball off the bounce and flew by all the Pirate defenders for a 63-yard return for a touchdown for a 35-0 lead halfway through the quarter. Five minutes later, Barnesville struck again when they put a five-play 59 yard together capped by a Tonsfeldt 20 yard run for his fourth touchdown of the half and Barnesville led 42-0 going into halftime.
Crookston only had 32 yards of offense in the first half while Barnesville tallied 288 yards of offense, scoring on five of their seven offensive series. “That was a tough half and I think they have a very good chance of going a long way again this season,” said Coach Butt. “We couldn’t get anything going on either end of the ball.”
THIRD QUARTER
Barnesville started to rotate some of the backups into the game and that allowed the Pirates to move the ball and on their first possession of the second half, they had a big 42 yard run by Leyton Salentine to get Crookston into Barnesville territory. The Pirates turned the ball over on downs four plays later at the Barnesville 13 yard line. Barnesville’s first offensive play on the ensuing drive was a 42 yard run from Hunter Anderson to get into Crookston territory. Five plays and four minutes later the Trojans capped a six-play 87-yard drive with a Cameron Heng nine-yard touchdown for a 49-0 lead with 3:29 left in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Both teams emptied the benches in the fourth quarter and most, if not all the players dressed on both sides of the field were able to play in the game. Barnesville had 10 players carry the ball in the game and the eighth player to get a handoff was Noah Krause and he scampered 22 yards for a touchdown with 3:33 left in the game and after a two-point conversion, the Trojans led 57-0 and that is how the game would end. “We still have a lot of work to do. We weren’t ready and we weren’t as fast as they were and they took it to us. You can tell they have been in the weight room and they took us out to the woodshed,” said Coach Butt. “The guys never gave up and we wanted to have some good momentum going into next week, but we didn’t. They took us to the woodshed and dominated us. They are a very good team and this loss will take a while to get over.”
Crookston drops to 0-4 on the year and will travel to Hawley on Friday, September 27. Barnesville improves to 4-0 on the year.
