The Crookston Pirates Girls’ soccer team gave up a goal two minutes into the game and that would be the only scoring in the game as the Pelican Rapids Vikings won the game 1-0 in a Section 8A matchup in Pelican Rapids.
FIRST HALF –
Pelican Rapids started the game well. Danica Perez Sanchez scored from an indirect free kick about 20 yards out. The ball deflected off the Pirate wall into the goal for a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half was back-and-forth, with both teams getting five shots on goal. Crookston was missing three players due to injury, including the goalkeeper, Shyuh Burnette, and seventh grader Kambree Wangen, who took one for the team and played goalie for the first time this season. After the first shot, she played a great game in net and stopped every Vikings shot the rest of the game. “Kambree showed she is a team player,” said Coach Sarah Reese. “She rose up in a difficult situation.” Pelican Rapids took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Crookston continued to play a solid all-around game as they outshot Pelican Rapids in the first half 5-4. There wasn’t any scoring in the half, with Crookston getting several good shots on goal, including off a couple of corner kicks, but couldn’t get one past the Vikings’ goalkeeper, and the Vikings won 1-0. “We played a full 80 minutes with a positive team effort,” said Coach Reese. “Madi Knutson, Anna Heldstab, Nashelle Tellez-Vasquez, and Lainee Wagner played great team defense and had excellent recovery runs when needed. We had great leadership from Madi Knutson as she reassured our keeper and played composed while being positive and encouraging her teammates.”
Crookston drops to 1-7 on the year and will host Fergus Falls Hillcrest on Thursday.. Pelican Rapids is 2-4-1 on the year with both victories being 1-0 wins over Crookston.
