At approximately 1:52 a.m. Monday, April 1, an officer of the Crookston Police Department
observed a vehicle make a turn near the intersection of University Ave and Fisher Ave. in Crookston without the turn signal activated. The officer followed the vehicle west on Polk County Road 61 (Golf Course road) and observed the vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with the Highway 75 Bypass. The officer attempted a traffic stop by activating the emergency lights and siren. The suspect vehicle continued south on the bypass at speeds near 100 mph. The suspect vehicle again failed to stop for a
stop sign where the Highway 75 Bypass intersects with Old Highway 75 and 3rd Ave South. The vehicle continued east on 3rd Ave South where the driver lost control of the
vehicle crashing into a tree near the intersection with Bruce Street. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor. It’s unknown at this time if seatbelts were worn although airbags had deployed.
The driver is identified as Jose Angel Trevino, 29, of Crookston, the passenger was Jennifer Gutierrez, 27, of Crookston. Both were transported to RiverView Healthcare in Crookston with non-life threatening injuries. Trevino has since been arrested and
transported to the Northwest Regional Corrections Center. Related criminal charges
are pending for Trevino
The incident is an active investigation. The CPD was assisted by the Polk County
Sheriff’s Department, Crookston Ambulance, Crookston Fire Department and the MN
State Patrol.
