Crookston Public Library hosting several events the rest of October

The Crookston Public Library is offering several events for all ages, including a Halloween party for youth, author visits, and more.

The library will host an Author Visit by Janet Preus. Preus is the author of The Thirteenth Crime, which is set in 1887 Ottertail County and details the true events surrounding the death of Lillie Field. The author will visit the Fertile Public Library on Thursday, October 16 at 10:30 a.m. and the Crookston Public Library at 2 p.m., with additional stops listed at larl.org/legacy. The program is offered free-of-charge, thanks in part to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund. 

On Saturday, October 18, the library will host a Halloween party for elementary-age children, featuring Storytime, crafts, games, and more. The program will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and additional details are available at larl.org/events

A hands-on learning activity is scheduled at the Crookston Library on Monday, October 20 at 6 p.m., offering youth ages 5-13 a chance to learn about the game of Chess, as well as an opportunity for parents and caregivers to explore the many educational resources the library offers. This is one of several programs for youth held throughout the month; others include weekly Storytime (Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.) for youth ages 3-6 and a weekly Baby Bounce (Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.) for youth ages 0-3.

Later in the month, hear behind-the-scenes stories of one of Minnesota’s longest-serving governors, Rudy Perpich, with a series of historical presentations by author Ben Schierer offered at the Crookston Public Library on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. Schierer will share about Perpich’s background, including his youth on the Iron Range and his rise to the office of governor. Admission is free thanks in part to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

The Reading by the Red Book Club will also get in the spooky spirit with a conversation scheduled Tuesday, October 28 at 6 p.m. featuring thriller The Mesmerist by Caroline Woods, a murder mystery based on a real-life murder that occured in Minneapolis in the late 1800s.
