WALKS AND ERRORS COST CROOKSTON REDS IN LOSS TO THIEF RIVER FALLS BOMBERS

The Crookston Reds allowed nine walks with three errors in and lost 9-3 to the Thief River Falls Bombers, despite out-hitting the visitor nine to eight, in a non-League game played at Jim Karn Field.

Thief River Falls used a lead-off error to open the game with a runner on first base before two walks loaded the bases. A groundout plated the Bombers Izaak Keefe giving the visitors a 1-0 lead after one inning. In the top of the third inning, back-to-back walks followed by a fielder’s choice that ended with an errant throw in center field scored the Bombers second run of the game giving Thief River Falls a 2-0 lead. Steve Wiseth capped off the inning with a two-RBI double giving the Bombers a 4-0 lead after three innings. With a runner on third base, the Bombers sent a runner home from third on a dropped third strike increasing their lead to 5-0 after four innings. Trailing 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Reds used an error, single, and walk to load the bases before Alex Wolfe walked in Blake Kawlewski bringing Crookston within 6-1 after five innings. In the top of the sixth inning, Thief River Falls led off the inning with a walk before three hits plated three runs giving the Bombers a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Aaron Butcher reached on a dropped pop-up to first base to open the frame before Jacob Butcher lined a double into the outfield scoring Aaron Butcher bringing the Reds within 9-2. Trailing by seven runs entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Crookston’s first two batters were retired before Owen Ellefson singled to extend the game. Bailey Schmitz singled putting runners on first and second base before Alex Wolfe connected on an RBI single plating Ellefson and bringing Crookston within 9-3, but that’s where the Reds’ rally ended with Thief River Falls closing out a 9-3 win.

The Reds return to the diamond on Sunday when Crookston hosts a doubleheader with the Moorhead Miners beginning at 5:35 p.m. at Jim Karn Field.
