The Crookston School Board met on Monday in the Crookston High School Orchestra/Choir room.

The first item on the board was a public hearing from Shelby McQuay, a Senior Municipal Advisor with Ehlers Inc. The hearing was regarding approving abatement and authorizing the issuance of bonds. “The school board authorized and granted the abatement and therefore could authorize the issuance of bonds for which a portion of which is the abatement,” said McQuay. “But for cost efficiencies, the board included the abatement portion, capital facilities portion, and a refunding portion into one bond issue.” The funds will help cover parking lots and capital maintenance projects throughout the district.

The meeting continued with the approval of the agenda and the consent agenda. The consent agenda included the acceptance of resignations from Dietary Worker Barb Holweger, Orchestra Instructor Haley Ellis, Social Studies Instructor Sutton Junkermeier, and Special Education Instructor Wyatt Ecklund. The consent agenda also approved employment from Grade 4 Instructor Kara Hovelstud, Band Instructor Manny Green, Elementary Instructor Kristine Dickson, Early Childhood Coordinator Gina Gunderson, Boys Basketball Coach Elliot Erdmann, and Girls Basketball Coach/ Social Studies Instructor Kory Baril.

The consent agenda concluded with the acceptance of grants and donations, which included-

A donation from Peter & Ingrid Koller for the TW Thorson Music Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00
A donation from Leland & Judy Ellingson for the Grade 6 Itasca Field Trip in the amount of $505.00

“I’m just so impressed with the amount of donations and grants we get from community organizations,” Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Randy Bergquist. “We’ve got the Minnesota Masonic Charities for FFA, the Crookston Masonic Lodge, the June Shaver Scholarship Fund, Peter & Ingrid Koller for the Thorson Music Scholarship, and Leland & Judy Ellingson for the sixth grade Itasca field trip. It’s just great how much support we have for our students these days.”

Following the approval of the consent agenda, the Crookston School Board went on to unanimously approve issues regarding staff development/mentoring, abatement, bond issuance, and finally, the local literacy plan.

The meeting finished with the approval of the minutes from the school board’s April 22 meeting and the approval of current bills. The next meeting will be Monday, June 24, at 5:00 p.m. at the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra Room.
