CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS INCREASE OF 70 STUDENTS ON FIRST DAY ENROLLMENT

KROX collected the enrollment numbers for the Crookston Public School District, Cathedral Elementary School, and Our Savior’s Lutheran School for the first week of school at each building for 2023.

The Crookston School District began the school year with an enrollment of 1,140 students, an increase of 70 over last school year’s enrollment. The good news is the preschool enrollment is 108 students. That is by far the largest group since they offered it, and although the district doesn’t get funding for Preschool, it is a good sign for future enrollment.

Our Saviors Lutheran School offers Preschool through sixth grade, and they have 52 total students enrolled, an increase of one student from last year.

The Cathedral School offers Preschool through fifth grade, and starting this year, they are not offering a sixth-grade class. The 2023 enrollment shows 72 students in total, with only two fifth-grade students registered. Cathedral was only down three students.

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Randy Bergquist is excited to see enrollment rising throughout the district. “Our enrollment right now looks very nice compared to the end of the school year last year. For first through twelfth grade, we are up 35 students,” said Bergquist. “Keep in mind these numbers can fluctuate during the first week of school when kids come in and register late, or sometimes parents will pull their kid out of school during the first week of school.”

Bergquist also stated this is a great sign for the district because the more significant the student enrollment, the more funding the district receives. Kindergarten is down approximately ten students from last year. However, there are parents on a waiting list to enroll their kids. “I’ve heard there is 18 parents that have children who are kindergarten eligible,” said Bergquist. “They are either going to keep their child home or have them in preschool one more year to get them ready and acclimated for kindergarten.”
