The Crookston Pirate Softball team dug a massive hole early and couldn’t come back as the Thief River Falls Prowlers beat the Pirztes by a score of 15-4 in 6 innings at Donnie Lauf Field on Tuesday.
FIRST INNING-
The Prowlers got off to an incredible start to open up the contest, as they moved runners like a carousel around the bases. The first four batters reached on 3 walks and a hit batter by pitcher Allysen Wagner, taking an early 1-0 lead. Then, Amery Rodriguez drove in two to make it 3-0. After another run scored on a wild pitch, an RBI groundout by Nora Martell made it 5-0. A two-base error by Madi Bruggeman at shortstop allowed two more runs to score, and then a wild pitch brought in the final run of the inning, as the Prowlers took an 8-0 lead in the opening frame.
Emily Bowman led off the home half of the first inning with a walk, but was subsequently caught stealing., The Pirates were retired in order to end the inning.
SECOND INNING-
The Prowlers looked to continue their surge in the 2nd. They scored a run before any of their hitters made contact, as three walks and a wild pitch quickly made it 9-0 TRF. A Javayla Vandal-Gayden sac fly then made it 10-0 Prowlers, and Braylee Weinen was able to drive in the 11th run of the game for the Prowlers on an RBI single.
The Pirates were retired in order in the bottom of the 2nd on a lineout, groundout and a flyout.
THIRD INNING –
Emily Bowman came in to pitch from the 3rd inning onward, and the Pirates were able to settle down under her leadership. After two quick outs, the Prowlers threatened agaqin with back-to-back hits, but Bowman induced a hard lineout to end the threat without any more runs crossing the plate.
However, Mika Berneir had her best inning in the circle for the Prowlers in the 3rd, as she struck out the side to retire the Pirates in order.
FOURTH INNING-
The Prowlers once again made solid contact on Bowman in the 4th, recording two straight singles with one out. Then, an absolute bullet by Grace Gonzales was speared by Madi Bruggeman, and she then stapped on second to record an unassisted double play, ending the inning.
The Pirates were finally able to break the scoreless streak in the 4th. After two quick outs, Bruggeman singled, and Kamebelle Freije then hit the fence in left field on the fly with an RBI double, cutting the lead to 11-1. The Pirates had runners on the corners with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning.
FIFTH INNING-
Bowman had her best pitching inning of the game in the 5th, only allowing a two-out single that amounted to nothing, as the rest of the Prowlers went down quietly.
The Pirates did not go down quietly in the inning. They finally got to Berneir, and Brylee Darco drove in a run on an RBI double after a one-base error, making it 11-2. Bowman then got a base hit, and an error was also committed, allowing another run to score to make it 11-3. Bruggeman then grounded out, plating Bowman, and the game went to the 6th with an 11-4 Prowler lead.
SIXTH INNING-
The Prowlers looked to put the game away in the 6th. A leadoff single came all the way around to score on two separate wild pitches to give TRF a 12-2 lead. The Prowlers then got the next 4 runners on base with a walk, a single, another walk and a hit batter, and two runs came across in the sequence. Then, Raya Dahlin hit a sac fly to cap off a 4-run inning, making the score 15-4.
The Pirates led off the home half of the inning with a single, but a quick 6-4-3 DP on the next pitch thwarted any threat, as Leia Parkin grounded out to end the game, as TRF wins 15-4.
Crookston drops to 1-3 on the season.
