CROOKSTON SOFTBALL STARTS STRONG, ROSEAU FINISHES BETTER TO WIN

The Crookston Pirate Softball team hosted the Roseau Rams on Thursday afternoon from Lauf Field. The two teams met last week with Roseau coming away with a 9-2 win. This time Crookston battled and led for part of the game, but the final score was a similar result with Roseau winning 13-7. “We started strong and overall I am very proud of the girls,” said Pirates Head Coach Sunny Bowman. “We played very well early in the game and I thought the girls did a good job of being ready to hit today.”

Roseau would score three runs in the top of the first inning to start the game. The Rams would get leadoff singles, and back-to-back rbi groundouts to take a 2-0 lead. After a Pirates error and a Rams stolen base, a 2-out single would plate another giving Roseau the 3-0 lead.

Crookston would respond in the bottom of the first. Addie Fee and Emily Bowman would both walk to lead things off, and back-to-back hits from Quinn Seigle and Jenna Coauette would score Fee and make it 3-1. Bowman would then try and steal third and be thrown out for the first out of the inning. After a strikeout, Aleah Bienek would hit an infield rbi single scoring Seigle and making it 3-2 Roseau after one inning of play.

Roseau would go scoreless in the top of the second inning, and Crookston would bat around their order in the bottom of the second inning scoring four runs to take a 6-3 lead after two innings of play. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Kendall Bergquist.

Roseau would outscore the Pirates the rest of the game 10-1 to win by a final score of 13-7. A big reason was that the Rams brought in Brooklyn Hulst to pitch the final five innings of the game. Hulst pitched all seven innings for the Rams in the first meeting with the Pirates and was just as solid this time striking out 8 Pirates hitters while allowing just 2 hits and 1 run. “Once she came in the game and was pitching you could tell things changed for us,” said Pirates Head Coach Sunny Bowman. “She’s a really good pitcher and anytime we face a really good team we need to expect facing someone like that.

The Rams also slowly chipped away at the Pirates lead throughout the rest of the game scoring one run in the third inning, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth inning.

Crookston falls to 1-4 on the season and will host Sacred Heart tomorrow afternoon. “I’m excited for the opportunity to come back out tomorrow afternoon and play again. It should be another beautiful day and a great opportunity for us,” said Pirates Head Coach Sunny Bowman. The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on KROX starting with the RiverView Health pregame show at 4:00 p.m.
