The Crookston Pirate Girls Track team finished second out of nine teams and the Pirate Boys Track team finished seventh out of nine teams at the Heart O Lakes conference indoor meet at Concordia College in Moorhead.
GIRLS –
The Pirate girls had dominating performances by returning state placer Katherine Geist as she won the 1600 meters race by 23.55 seconds. Katherine’s time was 5:14.25 which shattered the previous Crookston High School girls track indoor record of 5:28.81 set by Janae Altepeter in 1999. Geist also won the 800-meter race by 13 seconds (one second away from the school indoor record) for two first-place finishes and 20 team points. “She had a really good start to the season and she is always working hard and is mentally and physically tough,” said Pirate Coach Amy Boll. “It was a nice start to her junior season.”
Breanna Kressin also had a great day with a first-place finish in the 55 hurdles and a second-place finish in the 200 meters. Kressin was also on the second place 4×200 relay team to bring in 28 team points. “She is a very good athlete, she works hard and has the desire to push,” said Coach Boll. “She had a great start to the season and looked good in her races.”
The Pirates dominated the 400-meter race with four of the top six places. Kressin was second with Hayden Winjum finishing fourth place, Rachel Hefta was fifth and Cassie Solheim finished sixth place to bring in 27 team points in one race. “This is the first meet and we are looking to get times and see where they are at and they can work to improve on the times,” said Coach Boll. “The girls ran hard and it was nice to see us with the four placers.”
Emma Borowicz had an impressive run in the 400 meters with a second-place finish and she was also on the second place 4×200 relay team.
“We lost a lot of good seniors from last years team so we weren’t sure what to expect and the girls came out and really competed hard today,” said Coach Boll. “We have some good underclassmen and we had some girls that were at their first varsity track meet and we saw a lot of good times, throws and jumps so it was a very successful meet to open the season.”
BOYS –
The Pirate Boys track team was led by Noah Kiel with fourth place finishes in the 200 and 400-meter races. “He is a fast kid,” said Pirate Boys Coach Wayne Folkers. “It wasn’t a bad way to start and he really ran well today.”
Jaden Lubarski finished fifth in the 800 meters. “Jaden is a lot stronger this year,” said Coach Folkers. “He had a good start and we are going to work on his 800 this year and see if we can have him ready to go at section time.”
Karsten Isaacson finished sixth place in the high jump with a jump of five feet. “I wasn’t even going to put him in the high jump today until he asked to be put in it,” said Coach Folkers. “Karsten is a good high jumper and he does distance and he is a great kid and works hard.”
Sam Sanchez finished seventh place in the shot put with a personal best throw of 41 feet and one inch, which was three feet better than his best throw last year. “That was an excellent way to start the year,” said Coach Folkers. “You can tell he has been in the weight room and had a great start to his senior season.”
The athletes and coaches were happy to get the first event of the season under their belts. “I was very happy we were able to get out and compete and the boys performed well, especially since we really haven’t been able to practice outside and we haven’t practiced the high jump, long jump, and other events yet,” said Coach Folkers. “It was nice to get the first meet in and now we have sometimes and will have some things to work on and get ready for the next meet on Monday.”
Crookston will compete in another indoor meet on Monday, April 1 at Concordia College in Moorhead.
