The Crookston United Way has supported the Polk County Development Achievement Center (DAC) for many years. Polk County DAC staff expressed the feeling the community is blessed to have the United Way active and engaged within the area. In 2018, the United Way supported DAC with the purchase of a PAL lift explained United Way executive director Lori Wagner.
“This year we assisted with getting a platform lift or PAL lift,” said Wagner. “The lift can be used to transfer someone from one area to another by standing with bars under their arms and they gain strength by holding on and standing independently.”
In the past, the United Ways has also provided support for DAC to purchase a Carolina Rocker, a wheelchair accessible rocking chair, equipment to help a person who is wheelchair bound stand for periods of time. The ‘stander,’ as they are called, not only provides an opportunity to be eye level with another person but allows the individual to stretch all their muscles and provides enough support that they are hands-free allowing them to work on a task.
Polk County DAC was established in 1964 and provides day training and habilitation to around 50 adults with developmental disabilities.
