CROOKSTON VS UNITED NORTH CENTRAL –
Crookston came into the match shorthanded, but it really didn’t matter as United North Central came out strong and won the first five matches by pin or forfeit to take a 30-0 and cruised the rest of the way on their way to a 66-16 victory over the Pirates. “I don’t know if we have lost the first five matches of any match since I have been coaching,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “We were pinned with point-one seconds left in the first match and it snowballed from there.”
After losing the first five matches, Crookston bounced back with a victory at 138 pounds when Carter Coauette won the first Pirate match of the evening. Carter wrestled well and led 6-2 at the end of the first period. Carter continued his solid wrestling as he won by a pin in the second period to bring the Pirates within a 30-6 deficit. “It was the first time he wrestled at 138-pounds this year,” said Coach Hanson. “He wrestled very well and controlled the match the entire way.”
United North Central won the next three matches by pin to build a 48-6 lead.
Crookston got back on the winning track when Spencer Ness wrestled a great match on his way to a 12-2 major decision. Spencer took a 4-1 lead after a takedown halfway through the second period and took a 6-1 lead into the third. In the third period, Spencer continued his solid wrestling as he was able to get a takedown late to win the match 12-2 to hold on for a major decision win to get within a 48-10 deficit. “That was awesome. We needed that,” said Coach Hanson. “He wrestled well and that was nice to see.”
United North Central won the next match by forfeit before the second-ranked Ethan Boll made quick work of his opponent and won by a pin in 80-seconds for the third and final Pirate victory of the match. “Ethan got the first takedown and was dominant,” said Coach Hanson. “He faced a tough kid, but made quick work of.”
United North Central won the final three matches by a forfeit and two by pins for a 66-16 victory.
Crookston drops to 5-3 in duals on the year. United North Central improves to 8-3 in duals.

CROOKSTON VS FRAZEE –
In the final match of the night, Frazee won the final two matches to come from behind to beat the Crookston Pirates 37-30 in a Section 8A dual.
Crookston had a good start with Evin Trudeau jumping out to an 8-3 lead after two periods. He added three more points in the third period for an 11-3 victory and he gave his team four points with the major decision. “That was big,” said Coach Hanson. “He won by a major and got us going.”
Crookston had to forfeit at 113-pounds before Gavyn Hlucny won by a pin in 31 seconds at 120-pounds. “He was the agressor in the match,” said Coach Hanson. “That is what he needs to do every time he comes out and he is a tough wrestler in the top position.”
After Crookston lost by another forfeit, they bounced back with three straight wins. At 132-pounds, Casey Weiland won by a hard-fought 10-6 decision. “That was a fun match and Casey did some great stuff in the match,” said Coach Hanson. “He had some nice offense and a big win for us.”
Carter Coauette dominated his match from start to finish to pick up a 12-1 major decision. He took an 8-0 lead after the first period. “Carter came out strong and built a big lead early and that was nice to see,” said Coach Hanson. “We ran out of time to get a tech or pin, but it was a really good night for Carter.”
Ethan Bowman made it three wins in a row when he earned a 12-4 major decision victory to give the Pirates a 21-12 lead. “I think it was his second takedown that was text book, just like we teach it,” said Coach Hanson. “He stayed heavy and he gave up the escape and got the takedown late to get the major.”
After a loss at 152-pounds, Crookston bounced back when Spencer Ness won by a 3-1 decision. “Spencer wrestled well and built a 3-0 lead,” said Coach Hanson. “Spencer was able to use some defense to score the takedown and held on.”
Crookston lost the next two matches by a decision and forfeit before Ethan Boll won by a forfeit for a 30-25 lead with two matches left.
Frazee won the 220-pound match by a pin to take a 31-30 lead with one match left. Whoever won the heavyweight match would win the match and Frazee won by pin for a 37-30 victory. “We learned a lot tonight, both good and bad,” said Coach Hanson. “We have some time to work on getting better and we will do that over the next month.”
Crookston drops to 5-4 in duals and will travel to the Mahnomen-Waubun dual tournament on Friday. Frazee improves to 3-5 in duals.
