CROOKSTON WRESTLERS BEAT RLCC AND BLACKDUCK/CLB

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team had nine forfeit wins and split the four matches that were wrestled on their way to a 66-12 victory over the Red Lake County Central Mustangs, and they beat Blackduck-Cass Lake/Bena 43-22 to complete the sweep of the triangular held at Crookston High School.

CROOKSTON vs RED LAKE COUNTY CENTRAL
Crookston had the match won before the match started as Red Lake County Central only had four wrestlers.  So, four matches were actually wrestled in the match with the teams splitting the two matches.  The first match was at 152 pounds with Spencer Ness beating Gunnar Sundeen by pin with two seconds left in the first period to give the Pirates a 42-0 lead.  “Spencer did a good job of staying active,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “He scored on a few takedowns and went up 5-0 and was able to lock in the pinfall, so it was a good start for us.”
Crookston won the next two matches by forfeit before Red Lake County won two matches in a row.  Trystan Ferguson (ranked #7 at 170 pounds) beat Crookston’s Cade DeLeon by a pin in the first period. At 195 pounds, Paul DeHate won by a pin in the second period. “Ferguson is a very good wrestler and has been tough on us over the years.  I thought Cade did a good job of feeling out those attacks when they were coming, but Ferguson was too much,” said Coach Hanson. “Layten had a good first period and wrestled hard, but couldn’t get the win.”
At 220 pounds, #2 ranked (195 pounds) Ethan Boll beat #7 ranked (220 pounds) Zach Howard by a pin at 1:35.  Boll came out with a takedown in the first few seconds of the match and built a 7-0 lead before getting the pin.  “Ethan fired right off the whistle, had a takedown and two near-fall points in the first 10 seconds.  Ethan was really physical and he had some nice mat returns and eventually got the pin.  It was a dominant performance from Ethan,” said Coach Hanson, who added  “There isn’t a lot of things that surprise me with Ethan.  He is a very good wrestler and very powerful.”
At Heavyweight, Crookston’s Hunter Kresl won by forfeit and the Pirates won the match 66-12.

CROOKSTON vs BLACKDUCK/CASS LAKE-BENA
Both teams forfeited at 106 pounds and Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena took a 3-0 lead with a win by decision at 113 pounds.
Crookston responded with three wins in a row and starting it off was Carter Coauette with a win by pin in 40 seconds. “He does a good job of staying position and he is wrestling really well for us,” said Coach Hanson.
Ethan Bowman won his match at 126 pounds with a 13-2 decision. “Ethan got the first takedown and he is effective in the top position,” said Coach Hanson. “Ethan had one nice move feet to back and picked up the major decision.”
Zach Brown won by a pin in the third period at 132 pounds. “Zach got the first takedown early and went to work,” said Coach Hanson. “Zach got a few more takedowns and wore his opponent down and got the pin.”
After a Pirate loss, Cameron Weiland picked up a big pin at 145 pounds.  Not only was it a big team win, but it was the 75th pin of his career. “Hats off to Cam.  He got the pin in Cameron Weiland fashion.  He was in his position and locked up the move and got the pin,” said Coach Hanson. “To have 75 career wins is impressive and a bulk of his wins have come from pins.  He is a pinner.”
Hunter Knutson was the next Pirate to win with a 7-2 decision at 170 pounds. “Hunter is really coming on now,” said Coach Hanson. “He has strong hips, he is good at countering shots and I thought he dominated the match.”
Cade DeLeon and Ethan Boll won by forfeits and Layten Fuentes picked up the last Pirate victory with a pin in the third period. “It was a fun match for Leyton.  He got the takedown early,” said Coach Hanson. “Leyton hit a nice roll and was able to get the win.”
Crookston won the match 43-22. “It was something we needed right now after wrestling a bunch of tough teams.  When you are losing it isn’t always fun,” said Coach Hanson. “It was good to beat a really good team today.  It was a nice win for us and
I was proud of the way the guys wrestled today.”

Crookston improves to 14-6 in duals on the year and will host Moorhead and Fosston-Bagley in a triangular on Thursday.
