The Crookston Pirates Wrestling team bounced back on Friday night and had a 3-0 showing at the Mahnomen Quadrangular. The Pirates picked up wins against Pelican Rapids, Wadena-Deer-Creek, and Mahnomen-Wauban. “We were able to clean some things up from yesterday’s performance, and it showed throughout the night,” said Pirates Coach Wes Hanson.
CROOKSTON VS PELICAN RAPIDS –
Crookston had another good start with Evin Trudeau winning the 10-6 pound match by a 9-0 decision. Trudeau led 2-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second period as he dominated the six-minute match.
Crookston gave up a forfeit at 113-pounds before Gavyn Hlucny won his match at 120. He led 4-0 at the end of the first period with a takedown and a reversal and got a pin with 10-seconds left in the second period to give Crookston a 10-6 lead. Pelican Rapids took the lead with another win by forfeit for a 12-10 lead before Crookston won five matches in a row.
Casey Weiland won by a forfeit to give Crookston the lead for good. Carter Coauette continued his stellar wrestling as he won by a pin in the first period. Ethan Bowman followed with a pin late in the second period, Braxton Volker won by a 9-8 decision in a thrilling match, and Spencer Ness capped the streak with an impressive 8-1 decision for a 34-12 lead.
Crookston lost the match at 170-pounds before Crookston won the last five matches by forfeit for a 58-15 victory. “I thought our guys came out and competed right from the start tonight,” said Pirates Coach Wes Hanson. “Our guys were wrestling to score points and it showed.”

Evan Trudeau got Crookston off to a good start once again as he battled for a full six-minutes again as he won by an 11-4 decision. WDC won the next match by a forfeit to take a 6-3 lead. Crookston bounced back and won the seven matches. Gavin Hlucny won by a pin in the first period. Neither team had somebody at 126-pounds. Casey Weiland, Carter Coauette, and Braxton Volker won by forfeits while Spencer Ness won a thriller with a 9-7 overtime victory. Layten Fuentes followed with an 8-1 win at 170-pounds for a 39-6 lead. WDC won the next match by a pin before Ethan Boll and Hunter Kresl won by forfeits, and the Wolverines won the heavyweight match by pin and Crookston won the match by a 51-18 score.

CROOKSTON VS MAHNOMEN-WAUBAN –
Mahnomen-Wauban picked up wins at the 106/113-pound matches to take an early lead. Gavyn Hlucny got the Pirates on the board with pin, and after a Mahnomen-Wauban win at the 126-pound match via forfeit, the Pirates won the next four matches. Casey Weiland, Carter Coauette, Braxton Volker, and Ethan Bowman all picked up wins via pin. Mahnomen Wauban would win at the 160-pound match, but Layton Fuentus, Hunter Knutson, and Ethan Boll would all win for Crookston to help secure a victory. Boll’s pin took just 27 seconds in the 195-pound match. Mahnomen-Waubun won the 220/285-pound matches, but the Pirates picked up the 48-30 victory and improved to a perfect 3-0 record on the night. “Gavyn Hluncy had a great night and really helped us get going at the lower weights,” said Pirates coach Wes Hanson. “It wasn’t just in the lower weights though, we had a great performance all around from everyone.”
Gavyn Hluncy, Casey Weiland, Ethan Bowman, Ethan Boll, Braxton Volker, and Carter Coauette all went 3-0 on the night.
